PalmSource Europe DevCon cancelled

We weren't given a reason but according to a German source PalmSource has cancelled its Europe DevCon this year. The conference was held in the previous years during the Oktoberfest in Munich where attendees not only had the chance to talk about Palm OS, but also to go on booze cruises and watch naked people in the English Garten.

Wow, that really concerns me now. There are only a few obvious reasons I can think of to do that:
1) PalmSource is dying
[Don't think so, and sure hope not!]
2) PalmOS is going whole-hog into phones, so a devcon is a bad idea right now for traditional pda developers [possible]
3) Timelines are slipping on PalmOS for Linux and they don't want to reveal the problems publicly [also possible]
4) They are so focused on phone linux right now that they just don't want to take the time out to deal with a devcon [that sounds crazy to me]
5) They are way ahead of schedule and PalmOS is going to be rolled out a month after the DevCon scheduled date, so they don't want to spoil the thunderous surprise announcement. [I can dream, can't I?

They have dropped the OS they would have discussed at the DevCon, and the OS they mean to replace it with is still just a drawing on a napkin?

Excellent wording Surur. As sad as that sounds, I guess that really is the basic idea.

The big question is whether this is a transitional lull on the way to something great and popular, or if it's too little too late. Fortunately, a lot of times when it seems like technology will pass you by, it turns out that the best solution wins, even if it seems a little late. So I still think PalmSource has a great shot at making it work.

Unfortunately, I think the market they can win in is primarily the feature phone market, not smartphones and traditional handhelds which I would prefer to see them pursue heartily.

I think it's 3) .... PalmSource probably has enough to worry to get Palm for Linux out of the door fast enough than to spend expensive and time-consuming trips to Europe. Besides, the Treo hasn't really picked up there yet, so would have probably not been as successful as the US DevCon anyways.

Probably Palmsource has nothing to announce since Palm on Linux would not be ready for another year-or-so, and the new CEO (actually interim CEO) is just learning the ropes so to speak...

But it is a bad sign...

Palmsource made too many mistakes, and unlike Microsoft, Palmsource doesn't have nine lives (nor nine pocketbooks)....

Good point though. PalmLinux isnt ready and no need pushing resources to show possibles when the 11th hour was yesterday.
