Finally arrived! Time to send it back. :-(

Well, after a long 3 week wait I finally received my 505 yesterday. I opened the box, charged it and transfered a few free books to it (thank you Calibre and MR!!). I even managed to read a few pages before sleep set in last night. This morning, in the bright daylight, the first thing I noticed was a stuck pixel! In the middle of the screen a few inches from the left margin. Can't miss it, big black pixel staring at me. I called Dell (dotca) where I ordered from... no luck they say it's a Sony product I must call them. Sony Canada says sorry, you can send it to the repair depot (it will be gone 3-4 weeks at least) but they won't likely do anything. Dell has said I have 30 days to return it to them for refund so I can't risk sending it to Sony for a repair that probably won't happen. Sony outright refused to replace the unit. Has anyone had any luck getting a replacement for a brand new unit with this problem from Sony Canada? Thanks! P.S. These forums are really quite amazing. Even though I won't likely end up with a Sony I do plan on getting another reader eventually. |

Dell has to replace it (or take it back) anyway. Afaik they can't just say "call Sony, we just sold it".

Yes, I'm sure. I've seen enough stuck/dead pixels on LCD screens. :-) Even when the reader is off it's still quite visible. I charged it as per the instructions until the red light went out. Dell will not replace it either. They will give me a refund though. Last edited by notsure; 04-28-2009 at 07:48 PM. Reason: Fixed typo! |

That is really weird. I'd just do an exchange with Dell.

I agree. No reason not to take advantage of the exchange if it's available. For what it's worth, though, I've seen numerous Readers and I've yet to see what you saw, so chances are good that the next Reader you get will probably be fine.

I'm in the process of getting the RMA from Dell. Once that's done I guess I will place an order for a new one, hopefully it won't be another 3 week wait. :-) Thanks everyone and happy reading. |

I wonder why there is such a backlog in Canada. Have you thought of making a side trip to the US? Heh.

505 is, most likely, the best value for the money in Canada. I got mine from this place for $279 CAD (before taxes). The next cheapest thing (not counting eBookwise), was at newegg.ca Ectaco jetBook was offered for $255.99 CAD. ePub support, (digital) libraries with lots of DRMed PDF's, Amazon/Kindle absence... Things are going well for Sony ereader in Canada. |

Wow Ankh! I should have asked in here before purchasing... the RB Computing guys are just down the street from me!! I even purchased my last desktop from them. I may have to cancel my Dell order and check out the lead time from RBC. Lilac_jive; I had considered a trip south of the border but haven't been able to get away. Plus, it can be a hassle at the border... |

Hi Angst, I called them and they've given me a quote on a Silver (PRS-505SC) with a 1 week delivery time. Funny that it's not listed on their web page. The only glitch is that I've just found out Dell won't refund my money on the original unit for 30 days. I was notified of this when I cancelled my re-order with them. So, if my timing isn't exactly right I'll owe for 2 readers for a brief period of time and I hadn't planned on that. |

Yes, I got it from RBC, but it was SLOW. Two weeks to deliver is so unlike them. Red unit here, but I did not (and still don't) care about the colour.

Just an update; "defective" unit has been shipped back to Dell(.ca). RBC got my order on Sunday and I got an automated e-mail this morning saying it had arrived. I just got back from picking it up and so far no sign of pixel issues. Here's to hoping it says that way. :-) Unfortunately, it's charging now and I can't use it. :-( And a real special thanks to Ankh; thanks to you I got a replacement unit for less money and very fast. |
