Why is the Kindle named "Kindle"?

I'm not to keen on the name. Too many associations with "fire" for my liking. Always reminds me of Fahrenheit 451 *shudder*.

yeah I was gonna say, if you have to ask you never had a kindle. first thing you see when you open the box is that definition above (atleast on the K1)

Kindle is just cool. it's a word you don't hear all that often. and it just fits.

better than Bebook, Cybook, PRS, Etc.
Iliad was good, but then DR1000 sucks.
Jetbook works, cause its an actual word, then book.

I never thought about that, but then, the kindle plans to digitize all books, which means they can never destroyed, and can never be censored. which means Fahrenheit 451 can not happen anymore, thanks to google, and kindle. as long as the internet is up, books will exist and cannot be lost

But, DRM means you can't take them with you, and digital means contents can be easily "edited" to suit the Man....

It's not particularly a rational thought on my part, but the association still sticks with me. I think it has since I first heard the name.

Same here. And also Books are Burning by XTC. My first thought when I heard the name was kindle=kindling=stuff you start fires with. Only later did I think of kindling emotions.

it follows all of the requirements they say for advertising, a unique name that is not a category description like reader or reading system, it is unique, it is promoted, there is no other consumer product with a name close to it, they could call it george, but would a george by any other name would still display the same font sizes?

"Kindle" (i.e., to kindle sparks of recognition/interest/intelligence/learning/etc.) is a marketing ploy employed by Bezos to confuse us into thinking that he cares that we read, in stead of realizing he wants 'us' to buy his products. I wouldn't mind so much if Amazon were a non-profit, but now it is just designed to cause cognitive dissonance in potential buyers over having to choose between DRM and ease-of-use.

I can understand why they called it Kindle, to kindle our interest of ebooks and ebookreaders. But then to limit the sale to only one country seems stupid to me...

So, on to the boo... euh... kindle burning feasts!

kindle I associate with kindling = fire = presumably to try and herald the 'death' of paper as a medium for books ...

alternatively
a) someone set fire to something in a brainstorming session at Amazon.
b) kindle is an acronym for Keen Intuitively Neat Device (for) Library Electronic/électronique

I thought it was named after that "Fugitive" guy, you know Richard Kindle. They thought he killed his wife, but actually the one-armed man did it.
