Lexcycle has been acquired by Amazon

Lexcycle, the developer of Stanza (an ebook reader program), has been acquired by Amazon. Announcement here. This should be interesting...

I'm pleased for the Lexcycle founders - they must be happy with the price (whatever it is) or they would not have sold.

I'm puzzled as to what Amazon are going to do with Stanza, which is an ePub reader at heart. Could they be intending to roll ePub support into their current Kindle and iPhone apps, like Sony has done for their readers, so leading to a gradual switch from Kindle/Mobipocket towards ePub?

It will be interesting to see what happens...

Paul

Very interesting. Here's hoping they embrace ePub and don't try something nasty.

Glad I don't have an iPhone.

Lexscycle was supposed to be working on Stanza for other devices, too. Think we'll see any of them now?

Yeah, the announcement by Amazon is a little disturbing. After all, what do they have to gain by supporting epub? They've already made it clear that they want the Kindle to be primarily a tool for reading Amazon books, so adding more support for other formats is counterproductive... They don't need Stanza to be able to epub support to the Kindle, but they might like to see Stanza go away so they have less competition for their Iphone app...

My first thought was "Oh, Crap."

I really don't think Amazon needs any more influence on the eBook market.

This is not good news. Outside of the inherent benefits of Stanza, it was also used to access Amazon's competitor's stores. I don't imagine that Amazon will be supporting that functionality long-term.

Oh great (sarcastically), I really hope they don't kill the application. Amazon seems to be the big monster that squashes all things good.. Stanza rocks, but I suppose Amazon will either stop development on it, or cripple it so it's of no use..

My guess would be that Stanza will support DRMed Amazon books now.

And although the developers said something about Stanza still support other formats, I guess Amazon will say otherwise. That, or Amazon will support other formats to embrace more consumers, specially abroad.

Does anyone remember a time when AT&T was considered too dominate?

Could Amazon go down that path....

Split-split...

If that turns out to be the case, hooray! This cheer is predicated upon a fully-integrated WinXP/Win7 version of Stanza. That would mean I'd be able to download Kindle ebooks direct to my PC. I could live with that.

Or they could keep it basically separate like they have Mobipocket.
