New book by J.R.R. Tolkien to be released in May

David Brawn, the publishing director of HarperCollins UK, said: "It is an entirely unpublished work, dates from around the early 1930s, and will be published - all being well - in May this year. Otherwise the clue as to what the book will contain is in the title - THE LEGEND OF SIGURD AND GUDRUN. You will surmise from this that it is not a Middle-earth book, but we are confident that Tolkien fans will be fascinated by it."

For those who are wondering about it, I can already tell that this new edition will not be illustrated by Alan Lee; but have not been confirmed who will be the illustrator.

Christopher Tolkien edited Tolkien's most recent title The Children of Hurin in 2007.

Further details about the contents of the book will be revealed closer to publication.

Personally I'm not looking forward for this book, as it's not related to Middle Earth, but I think some Tolkien fans will be pleased with the announcement. I expect it in ebook format too, with today's release of other works by the same author.

I hope The Silmarillion is never released as an eBook. It was horribly dull and tedious.

Don't you think that's a little selfish, Jon - to hope that it's not released, just because you didn't enjoy it yourself? What about all the people (including myself) who did enjoy it?

Because there are a lot of other books that are overall better to more people that would make better eBooks.

That's your view. In my view, The Silmarillion is a stunning book; I'd love to have it as an e-book. In fact, if it's not released, I'll probably create my own.

I think it probably will be released if the others sell well.

I have to agree here - is there any buzz on when/if The Silmarillion might be released?

Seconding this. Loved the Silmarillion. The beginning is tough, but with a handy David Day Tolkien dictionary it was much easier to read.

Seconding this! These are my favorite Tolkien books after LoTR and The Hobbit.

Lovely stuff, whatever John might think. Selfish indeed, John. I don't read romance or horror, but I wouldn't want to inhibit the release of ebooks for those who do. It's no skin off my nose what someone else wants to read. There're plenty of electrons to go around.

I guess Jon just wanted to emphasize his dislike of the book than really mean it should never be released as an ebook.

I loved Silmarillion. And after reading it, it made me re-read LOTR. And it's REALLY rare for me to re-read anything.
