Second Chance Winners
What book have you started, and then given up on, only to give it a second try later and discover that you liked it after all?
I am currently giving Richard K. Morgan's Thirteen/Black Man a second chance and enjoying it very much. The first time I started the book, about six months ago, it didn't appeal to me at all. I think it was because I had just finished the author's Takeshi Kovacs trilogy and was expecting Thirteen/Black Man to be the same type of novel. It's not. Now, with Takeshi Kovacs six months behind me, I'm enjoying Thirteen/Black Man on its own merits. What are some of your second chance winners? |

For me, when I give up on a book, I don't go back. Too many other things to read.

I usually don't give books a second chance, either. In this case, however, I enjoyed Richard K. Morgan's other books so much that I thought Thirteen/Black Man must have something going for it. It's the same author, after all. So I gave it a second chance and it turned out I like the book after all.

Assassin's Apprentice. I was probably still at work, so I only read a page or two, no more. Wasn't sure I liked it. Tried it later and wound up buying the subsequent 2 books in the series too!

Shogun, by James Clavell.
The first time I read it, I just couldn't finish it. Now, I'd fnish it in one day if I could... (it may have had something to do with my age, I was 12 or 13 when I first tried to read it). I almost forgot, I could never finish Gaj Jin either, and am reading (or rather listening) to it right now... |
