I think Novik has the idea of DRM down pretty well.

Interesting slant to the article. They use the music industry and MP3's as an example, but from what I've seen a lot of musicians were pro DRM, at least at first, while many authors are completely against it.

Good interview. I also like that all the books in that series are available in ebook form and the first one is currently free. That's the way to do it.

I've yet to read her work. But I do have the first book on my 505 ready to read.

Her books would make cool movies too if Peter Jackson ever exercises his option on them.

If we have to live with DRM why not adopt a system exactly like Audible? It works great, I can register all the devices I want and have my books on any or all of them.

As I understand it, the device makers simply pay Audible a licensing fee to allow content on a given device.

I wonder if one of the reasons Amazon acquired Audible is for their distribution model and their encryption technology. I know Goldwave 5.0 was able to unlock Audible files but once that was gone there haven't been any real problems.

I know the other reason for acquiring Audible was of course their existing catalog of audiobooks and agreements with publishers.

Excellent point! Audible works fantastically and easily on many different devices. Why can't ebook stores follow their lead? I have downloaded up to 10 very long books, (many, more than 30 hours each) all at once, without any problems, and all within a few minutes. Then they are automatically added to my iTunes Library.
It's easy and pleasant to browse and shop there, and they have the whole 'regional thing' worked out nicely. If a book is not allowed for a member because of geographical restrictions, it just doesn't appear in a search. If you log out, and search as a guest, thereby seeing said book, you will get a very polite banner saying 'This book is currently not available for your geographical location'.

I have had the same experience with Audible. Simply flawless, well not without a hiccup or two but almost all of those were my devices themselves. If you wanna laugh I have a 160gb Creative Nomad Xtra which began life as a 30gb device. I have no need to a small backup drive like a 160gb so I stuffed it into the Xtra.

Anyway, their distribution model is just so easy and obvious to extend into ebooks. My initial hopes for Amazon was since they already owned Audible they would implement the same model. There has to be some reason why they did not go that way. Think about it there is zero chance Amazon can supply enough ebook reader devices to satisfy the market. The past year plus has clearly shown they cannot deliver in that area. I don;t see any single company will have that ability. For no other reason that everyone is different.

Come to think of it I never searched the forums here to see if there was ever a discussion of this topic. I would imagine it has been covered and there is a reason. Note I am not saying it is a reason that makes sense to a lot of us out here.

catsittingstill: Audible has worked just fine for Mac users via iTunes for years. Think about it, there are millions of Apple brand MP3 devices out there, why in the world would they not cater to that market.
