Mintbook
I just read about and viewed some videos on a device called the Mintbook.
I predict that this will be the device that, by capturing the attention of youth and social-addicts for it's chat features, makes reading on a device popular with the masses.
The screen's a bit small - but I don't think this is an issue for most young people - they'll actually cary this device in their pocket everywhere - and it's back-lit and colour which I think are important to most mainstream folks wanting a multipurpose device (though I'm someone who loves my ebookwise, and reads in the dark all the time). Unlike the itouch/iphone - it wins on price and battery life. Here are some of the links I followed for those interested: Mintpass http://www.pocketables.net/2008/11/mintpass-unveil.html http://product.mintpass.co.kr/p_mp100_mov.asp (check out the video of the chat features found at the bottom of the page - this is why I think, especially, this will be big with youth - along with the cheap price) http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/24/m...gad/#continued Thoughts? Am I crazy? |

And if anyone can read the Korean on the mintpass website (http://product.mintpass.co.kr) it would be nice to decipher the book formats currently supported. And even nicer if those who know more about it that me convinced them to put ePub on it.

This wont be a good device for communcation. Only Wifi? No WPA support? Stylus based touch screen? No bluetooth?
Now, it would be serious competition in the video/music market. |

I'm not seeing it as a business device. I'm seeing it as something social people would use - kids, teens, tweens, etc... it's not a pda replacement, it's a keep in quick touch witha brief note (remember - these are the generation steeped in acronyms and thumb-typing on a phone pad). They're wanting to look up a quick address, play their music and video (worst case - this is another personal media device) as well. The fact that they can easily (one hopes) read a book or graphic novel on it is a plus.

I agree, I see it as more of a social device, and it may be able to create a foothold with the younger demographic, where's the K2 and other more "mature" devices resonate with 20+ year olds.

the device is called a "Mintpad", and it orginally was a device with the focus on memo-taking, mp3, and wi-fi.
Recently the company let the users access the Win CE directly, so the device is becoming more of a small PDA.. The emphasis is not on e-book, and i think only txt fomat is supported, although i guess you can use Win CE to read other formats. |
