Do You Get the Books You Want?

Sorry for posting 900 questions on here, but I'm seriously considering spending the $359 on a Kindle 2. With that kind of money at stake, I want to be well versed in Kindle speak.

What is the ratio of books you've wanted to download and books you were actually able to find for kindle download?

99% of what I read is available somewhere in a format that I can use on the Kindle. Of course your mileage may vary and your best bet is to go through Amazon and see what titles interest you and also have a link to buy for Kindle. If you don't want to get everything from Amazon check out Books on Board. With a little work you can purchase mobi files from them to read on your Kindle.

Between the library and Amazon....no problem.

You do know you can search "kindle books" at amazon and see if what you want is available, right?

I have a Sony Reader, and I'd say about 80% of the books I want to read I can find. It totally depends on what you read though.

Do what I did, before buying an ebook reader I visited both Sony and Amazon ebook stores and search for my favorite authors. It was between these 2 readers. I also discovered Calibre, Lit books and other ebook stores. So as stated before, it's really about what you read, so research and find out if the things you like are available in ebook format. I'm able to find 90% of what I read in ebooks.

Amazon does a pretty good job of having newer books available for the Kindle, but they need to work harder on older or out of print books made for the Kindle. It's got to be cheaper to digitize them, than to reprint them. Ex: early niven+pournelle or brian daley

I prefer to turn the question about and ask "are there sufficient books available for my choice of reading device to keep me occupied", and I think that for virtually any device on the market, the answer is unquestionably "yes". It doesn't have to be an "all or nothing" situation - one can still buy paper books for things that you want to read which aren't available as eBooks.

They've got about... 80% of what I want. But that's compared to about 10% on the Sony Reader or anyone else.

That's mainly non-fiction, not best sellers.
For classics, etc... that's the same everywhere.

I agree with zuul; there are plenty of new books I want I can get from Amazon, but I have literally hundreds of older books I'd like to get that I can't get from Amazon and usually can't get from other sites either. So I have quite a few "pirate" books that I will happily replace with paid ones once they become available. Until then I also have hundreds of legitimately free books which I have yet to read.

So far i've found the books I want are available for Kindle. My wish list is growing. Out of all the ones I wanted only 1 was not available for Kindle.

Backlist books

I don't have a Kindle, but one thing I've definitely noticed while browsing through the Kindle store, is that the discounts on backlist books (novels mostly) are not really discounted all that much from the paperback prices. The biggest win is over the price of a New Release. As someone that tends to wait for the paperback to come out, or borrow from the library, this makes the Kindle value proposition a little less exciting. But you can't beat wispernet or the form factor...

Almost every new book I've wanted has been available. With back-catalog stuff, it's more like 60%-70%.
