I had an interesting morning...
While I was sitting watching the TV at about 3:20am this morning my living room brightened to a blinding white, went back down and then up again. I could hear the electricity in the air, and am not ashamed to tell you that it scared me a little. I look over my shoulder out the front window and the street corner is aglow cycling between all the colours of the rainbow. But primarily a remarkable arcing white. I opened the front door to get a better look. Obviously a power line was down but this was one hell of a visual, and looking through the trees it wasn't the only section of the line on the ground arcing on that road. I called it in after a minute or so. Smoke was billowing up like you wouldn't believe.

Someone arrived 5-10 minutes after that, since everything was washed out I couldn't even make out the vehicle, another 15 minutes and they got the power shut off. So this was arcing for a good half hour. It was another 45 minutes before the wire cooled completedly, which makes little sense to me. With everything out I could watch this orange serpent crack and hiss in amazement. Power didn't come back on til 7:10am, and the road is still blocked off. From the duration I have to wonder if the road surface itself didn't get damaged from the heat.

I spent the morning in candlelight realizing that I need something better to read by... I didn't hear any cars hit a pole or anything so not sure what brought down the line... I guess this round goes to you mtravellerh...

It was the squirrels. They sent a suicide nibbler up there to gnaw the wire. That's what happened to our phone lines 2 yrs ago, minus the laser light show.

MJ, are you usually awake at 3:20am? You know, in Stephen King's "Insomnia," a bunch of elderly insomniacs begin to see weird things on the streets at night.

The book was foolish, but the idea of something eerie happening on your street when everyone is supposed to be sleeping is extra creepy.

Funny thing, I read this post and then 5 minutes later an Animal Control vehicle drove past coming from that direction... I have to wonder if they weren't removing a crispy critter... Sorry, mtravellerh, but I don't think your accomplice made it....

Just out of curiousity, how are you finding reading with the 700 at night? So many people seemed to have issue with the screen being darker in the center I was wondering how it is working out for people...

And I wasn't bored for the first 2 hours, then that last hour dragged on...

i generally read using a lamp, not the sidelighting, and i have no troubles even at night by compartively dim lighting.

i have used the lighting on a few occasions when i wanted to read in total darkness, and i was not bothered by the difference in luminosity of the sides compared to the middle (on the lower level) ; i was noticeable but it didn't prevent me from reading.

sometimes i also use the lighting at my desk when (for example) i am fixing typos that i marked with notes while reading. the light is behind me so the 700 on the desk is in my shadow ; it is still legible, but i find it uncomfortable to adapt my eyes back and forth between the bright computer screen and the not-backlit-and-in-shadow 700 screen. so i turn on the lights to avoid adjusting my eyes so much when i'm glancing back and forth quickly. it makes it more comfortable, and again i'm not bothered by the uneven lighting.

Just an update, apparently a transformer blew about half a mile up the road from that corner. They are still out there working with that main street blocked off.
