DRM frustrations with unavailable book titles.

I have just bought the Sony PRS-505. It seems to be very well designed. I am still charging it via USB and it will not turn on 2 hours after plugging in!
I am already disappointed with the limited books available from the UK. I wanted to buy the best of John Steinbeck and although they are available in the US and Canada, they are not in the UK.
Does anyone have any ideas how I might get around this issue, please?

Hi, Arcticnick have you checked out the MR Wiki for information about the 505?
I know it took at least 4 hours for my new 505 to fully charge and you can't turn it on while it is on USB connection.

Steinbeck died in 1968, so it will be a while before his books enter the public domain anywhere. 2019 in Canada and I think 2039 in US.

Hopefully, someone from the UK will jump in to help with the Steinbeck buying issue

I also heard recently that Borders was going to start an ebook store in the UK, maybe they'll have a better selection.

If you can register a UK reader to an account at the US store (don't know if they check S/N's or anything) you could buy from the US store using gift vouchers. I know folks in the UK and Europe have done this with readers they've bought from the US.

Both WH Smith and Books on Board have John Steinbeck ebooks in epub and adobe.
You should be able to buy at both these sites.

Did you unplug it from the USB before trying it? It will not turn on while connected.

Fictionwise.com has a bunch of Steinbeck books, but they are not in a Sony-friendly format.

Also--Are you charging it from your computer and is the red light on the reader on? If not, then you're probably actually draining the battery rather than charging it.

Hope you can get it to charge and that you enjoy your reader!

I finally got my second PRS 505 yesterday and I only needed to charge it for an hour. The red light went off after that. I disconnected and turned on the unit and checked the battery level and it was full. Which was surprising as with the first one, it took longer than that. Is your red light still on after two hours? I do hope your unit is okay.

Given the choice between ePub and PDF, go for the ePub.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful advice.
I can't believe the great support.
By the way I was trying to power up my Sony reader with the USB cable plugged in. I am amazed the instructions did not make this clearer.
I have visited the Waterstones and WH Smiths site but they only have a limited range of Steinbeck's. Unfortunately not his best.
Thanks folks!
Nick

You can also convert the DRM'd to a PRS-505 readable format.
I usually only buy these DRM formats, if I have to - but I always convert these to ePub or LRF before loading onto my eBook (so far working for secure eReader and DRM-Mobipocket).

In case you need help, drop me a PM ...
