hello, hello...
just received a sony reader...the 505.
love it. really neat product. however, think i'm going to switch over to the 700 b/c of the better pdf compatibility. these forums are incredibly informative. so, thanks to all in advance! |

thanks for the hospitality, everyone.
definitely appreciate it. have learned quite a bit over the past few days perusing the site. hopefully, the 700 will handle pdfs in a satisfactory way! |

Welcome j7f.
You might want to investigate a bit more before you decide to get a Sony 700 to look at PDFs. There's heaps of discussions on this topic (most recently on displaying the Lonely Planet ebooks). I don't think a 6 inch screen will *ever* display a larger sized pdf in a satisfactory manner. After twelve months of experimenting with my Sony 505, I've given up. I'm looking for a cheap tablet PC for my pdf format ebooks. |

so, i went ahead w/ the swap.
yes...the 700's display is crippled by the touch screen. the 5 series' screen is just absolutely perfect for reading. the 7 series...well, crippled it is. i went ahead w/ the swap anyway. i can now comfortably peruse my pdfs. the gui is nice. the processor speed is able to handle it all really well. i'm happy w/ it. the light...it's not perfect. but, i'll tell you...it's certainly VERY nice to read to as my wife is falling asleep. the e-ink display on the 7 is actually quite nice. rather quite like the 5 series. however, we can't see it clearly b/c of the touch display above that. the touch screen is the culprit as we have all found out. but, i've come to love my 700. it reads like a charm. books, pdfs. whatever i've thrown at it. it sounds really great, too. leave it to sony to make sure that a sony product sounds suitable. hey, the had the walkman for goodness sake! the 700 has made me happy. both the 5 and 7 series have flaws. you get what you get. hopefully, the 7 will get a nice firmware upgrade for a couple things...then, we're off the races! |
