Has anyone thought about buying this one?
http://www.umpcportal.com/products/Gigabyte/M704/M704
Gigabyte m704 I've been wanting it for a while. The best reader for pdf is still a pc. I bought a samsung q1 a few months ago and liked it a lot. Only problem is it kept crashing so I had to return it. The price for gigabyte m704 this site offers is only 1/3 of what I paid for the samsung. Has anybody dealt with them before? http://packinc123.mybisi.com/product...PC_360497.html Moderator, please delete the web link if it is not allowed. |

Too bad, you missed their black friday special: buy an umpc, get 10 iphones free !
Seriously, this site is a scam. Send money at your own risk. |

From what I can see about that model, it only has about 3 hours of battery life to it. So, I wouldn't think all that much of it as a digital reader ... not if you have to plug it in every three hours or carry the plug with you everywhere. Sorts of defeats the whole portability idea with regard to reading digital books. So, that's my 2 cents. |

Thank you, thebrave and RickyMaveety. I chickened out and didn't buy it. They probably get the supplies directly from Taiwan and don't have any tech support. If anything goes wrong, I've nowhere to fix it. Thanks again.

Hmmm .... couldn't say. The Gigabyte company's US service center is in City of Industry, CA. Their newest UMPC seems to use the Intel Atom CPU .... so it sounds like a good company to me.
I don't know enough about the model you saw to tell you much about the specs. I do know, however, that a three hour battery life is not what you want in a portable reader. This model has a Via Esther CPU, which I have never heard of. Also it says that the battery is 4+ hours, but the reviews are not showing the same results. I don't think I'd even want to use a 4+ hour battery device for an ebook reader. Last edited by RickyMaveety; 12-03-2008 at 09:57 PM. |

Thank you very much, RickyMaveety. I looked up that company's address on google. It's an apartment building. So probably it's a home based business. I don't really worry about that except I may have to return the item to Taiwan for repairs if I need to. I don't really think the service center in the city of industry would handle the repairs since they don't sell the product. Thank you for all the input.

I ordered one of these Thursday.
They shipped it Friday. Hopefully it will get here Tuesday. Was hoping to find a thread on them. I could have gotten the more durable HTC Shift for 70 dollars more (and had GPRS internet), but I wanted the high resolution screen for reading. This way I can buy books at Starbucks and format shift them for Kimmy's PRS-505 on the fly. I will post pictures of it running mibipocket after it comes in. |

when in doubt about an retailer/e-tailer...I always suggest looking for them at:
http://www.ResellerRatings.com If they either have a bad rating OR do not exist on the site and you have never done business with them before...keep walking out the door. Granted some new smaller sellers are not, or maybe even ever, going to show up on that site, but still for these sort of items, the old adage of "...if it is too good to be true...it is..." really applies. |
