Who am I
Hello folks,
Not actually my first post but I figured I'd come in and introduce myself in case anyone wanted to read it. So I am an avid reader (own 100's of mass market paperbacks and a few hardcovers from my favorite authors) and a single father of 4. I've been interested in ebooks for a while, been watching e-ink ever since their first patent, but do to my situation buying an ereader has been outside my budget. Just got a samsung i910 and it's doing a good job as an ereader so I've gotten into it more now. Using Calibre to organize my small collection and Mobipocket on my phone as my reader, would like to buy a cybook gen3 at some point but not soon. As for topics my favorite reads are all fantasy/sci-fi and my favorite author is Lawrence Watt-Evans who also happens to be a big supporter of ebooks. Outside of books I'm a computer programmer and have been for a couple of decades now, I work for a college and I own my own business. If I get time I'd like to contribute as a programmer to the community but as I don't know python and a lot of the development seems to take place in python I think I'll have to support by clicking a few of the donate links. Anyways in short that's me |

Cool. I graduated from Old Lyme High and my mom and dad (both New Yorkers) retired in Groton.

Welcome Giddion. I own three devices (plus my PCs) that have books on them. My first and favorite device is the Kindle. With the announcement of the Kindle V2 yesterday, there are going to be LOTS of the V1 devices showing up on eBay at very reasonable prices. The second device I purchased is the Sony PRS-505 and my hubby bought me the lighted cover for Christmas, so I now use the Sony at night when traveling in the car since the light doesn't interfere with his night vision. I also installed MobiPocket Reader on my Blackberry and have one book on it for "stealth" reading. While everyone else is checking their e-mail, I'm reading a couple of pages in my SF novel downloaded from Baen.com.
One advantage of the Kindle above and beyond the devices that you already have is that Amazon's catalog tends much more reasonably priced than the same titles through other sellers. But, if you're catching up on the many classics and well-written books which are in the public domain, then your Samsung looks like it may do the trick for the time being. And -- I wasn't aware of that hand-held device. To use as a cell phone, I'd need an equivalent device which supported the AT&T cellular network, but I could be interested in it without the cell function! Wi-Fi, music, photos, and various applications such as MobiPocket Reader seem to make it a very desirable hand-held. I didn't know that any phones offered Wi-Fi in addition to the cell functions. I'm going to have to research that as a data option/alternative to the cell data services. I'm glad you posted this and made me aware of the new devices coming out. |
