Smile Author looking for help with this technology

Hi everyone! I'm an artist and have a small book, which included color photos, that I was trying to upload to amazon tonight. It's not going well, so thought I'd sign up here and look around a little, and see if this technology is relevant to my area. Do many digital books contain photos? Is much technical knowlege required to convert a pdf book to kindle? Anyway, I'm sure I'll learn a lot here, whether I can handle the task or not!

Welcome to MobileRead

One of our members -- Steve Jordan -- has already added several of his books to Amazon for the Kindle and he may be able to help on the upload part. I will send him a PM about this thread.

Good luck and keep us informed of how it resolves.

Message received!

MA, the average Kindle book has at least a cover photo attached, and some can have interior photos as well. If you've investigated e-books further, you might know that a Kindle e-book format is basically an altered Mobipocket format. You can add photos to either format. Be aware that, as Kindle displays in b/w and greys only, you might need to manipulate your photo in another graphics application to make sure it is well-readable at greyscale.

Graphics size might also be an issue. (Any Kindle owners around, please chime in on how Kindle handles photo resizing.)

Amazon's Digital Publishing System (DPS) is best suited to upload documents in formats like Word and Mobipocket. It can render documents differently, depending on which format you use... it's always best to check the file you create, every single page, to make sure it rendered properly. I've never tried uploading a file from PDF, so I don't know how well that would work (or even if it's possible). If you have the file in its original format, you might need to convert it to another format besides PDF to do the upload.

You might also consider using the pro version of Mobipocket Creator to create your e-book, then using that Mobipocket file to upload to Kindle DPS.

If you go to the "Workshop" forum you'll get lots of help. PDF is far from the ideal "starting point" if you're creating a Kindle book.

As I say, go to the "Workshop" forum and people will be delighted to assist you.

Thanks folks..appreciate the responses. I jumped into this before I researched the technology...ALWAYS a bad idea. That's ok though, I'll go back to square one and learn!
