Three Cups of Tea
Finished this book earlier this year and enjoyed it.
Now there seems to be considerable controversy about the truthfulness of his stories. Very sad if true. http://www.metafilter.com/102618/Sor...-only-two-cups |

I just heard about this on cnn and it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I never read the book, but my boss loved it and keeps trying to get me to read it.

Even if false, it's still a good book, and Greg is doing good work. Perhaps the story was a fiction created to explain the missing page in his passport to the US consulate? Considering how much he talked about Yak dung in the book, some of it might have made it's way into the story.
If you search for "K2 Pakistan" on Google Maps satellite, you can follow his path off K2, find the river turnoff he missed, and the village where first built a school, and the bridge he built. (Down and to the left.) |

More on Greg from 60 Minutes.
It does look like he has a penchant for embellishing the truth. The best line from the clip: "He is not Bernie Madoff...He has helped thousands of school kids in Pakistan..." |

I taught this book in a college class this winter, and the kids loved it. We were all sad to learn about everything in Three Cups of Deceit by Jon Krakauer. They're both very interesting books, and even if half of what Mortenson said was exaggerated he's still done some great work.

The odd thing about Krakauer's take on Mortenson is that so many of the lies, assuming that's what they are, were unnecessary. They made a different story, not necessarily a better story. The overall effect was to make you wonder why Mortenson felt the truth was inadequate.
