The final novel in the “Anne of Green Gables” series centers on Rilla, Anne Blythe’s youngest daughter, during World War I. The fifteen-year-old transforms from a shallow, carefree girl into a responsible adult who manages the home front, adopts an orphaned baby, and supports the war effort. As her brothers and friends leave for Europe to fight, Rilla, who at first only cares about dances and boys, quickly grows up. Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) is best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables (1908). Thanks to the title character, orphan Anne Shirley, Montgomery became well-known during her lifetime and gained a global fan base. Her writing is often categorized as “juvenile fiction”, but adults remain faithful readers. Virtually all her writings remain in print today.
