beginner getting to grips with Sony 505

I'm such a newbie I don't even know where the appropriate place is to look in the forum - can I convert other formats into .LRF? Especially .PDF files? If so, can someone point me to conversion software - free or paid-for, I don't mind! Is there an FAQ section on the forum please?
Thanks
Glenn Cornish, in wet and windy Surrey, UK

Hi Glenn and welcome to the Forum. I've used Calibre numerous times to convert books over to the Sony format. Good luck and you'll be able to get lots of advice here.

Thanks to both of you. I'm about to try it - not at all sure if I'll be successful - seems like alchemy to me!

Hi Glen and welcome!

I'm afraid you've picked the wrong format. Calibre is a fantastic tool and I use it all the time, but the one thing it won't do is pdf files. In fact, I don't think you can do much with pdfs at all except crunch them to html. There have been many discussions here about how useless pdf is for ebooks and how pdf doesn't really work with the Sony or any other ereader because of the 're-flow' of text, even when converted from html to lrf (don't ask - it's alchemy to me, too!).
Having said that, I have used pdfs on the Sony by downloading them to Adobe Digital Editions (free, but you need to activate it) and then transferring it to the Sony. But it doesn't look good........
Sorry!

Not sure I agree Dickon, although I'm a newbie too I have used Calibre to convert pdf into lrf and found the result adequate - certainly a lot better than trying to read a pdf on the 505.

Oh, as to how you do it. It's simple. Open Calibre, click the "Add books" icon in the upper left corner and navigate to the pdf you want to convert. When you've imported this, highlight it with your mouse, then click the "Convert e-books" icon. A dialogue box will open. Just click ok to everything and let calibre get on with the job. When it's finished converting, highlight the new file and click the "send to device" icon (with your 505 plugged in to your usb port) and the file will be sent to your reader.

Good luck.
