Unhappy corrupt error not fixed by signing out and back into my kobo account

hi, i'm at a loss.
my computer was bugging out and didn't want to eject my kobo after i ejected it through calibre, so i tried to force eject and then unplugged the kobo. i know that was a bad move. now i cant connect to calibre, i keep getting this error:
calibre, version 8.7.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

CorruptError: database disk image is malformed

i tried what reddit suggested for "database disk image is malformed" errors and logged out of my kobo account, then back in. my books are there (all my progress & collections lost, of course) but it hasn't resolved the error on calibre.

if anyone knows what i can do to get things working like normal again, that would be super appreciated.

to update, i've also tried rebooting after logging back in before connecting to my computer, and reinstalling calibre

Unless you have a backup, you have to delete the database under .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite, which will fix the error at the expense of also effectively factory resetting your device.

What model Kobo is it? Your profile says Kobo WiFi....

What version of firmware is on the Kobo?

Reinstalling calibre won't change anything.

Have you tried a different USB cable?

Where did you log out of your Kobo account? On the ereader or on the website?

hi everyone, thanks for the replies.

i've been having issues with my USB ports pulling too much power (even when my powered USB hub has all the ports turned off and plugged into nothing) and i think that had something to do with things, because after unplugging my usb hub and plugging directly into the computer, re-doing the log-out + reset move, i got it to work again. now just dealing with the annoying stuff from having logged out and lost my progress and collections.

if anyone happens to know if it is possible to re-apply the collections tags i have stored in calibre to the books in such a way that they'll go back into the collections on the kobo without me having to do it all manually book-by-book, that'd be sweet.

@ alerson: hm! i got it sort of figured out before seeing this. in case i need to try this in the future, would this be in the kobo's files as accessed through my computer?

@ peter: oh yeah sorry about that i forgot to update when i upgraded. i've got a kobo libra color! it did end up being USB related though in the end i think, just a new manifestations of a general usb power issue i've been running into repeatedly

@ DNSB: i logged out on my kobo ereader, not on the website!

Thanks. I was curious since one person a few years back was trying to log out on the Kobo website to fix a device database error.

As long as calibre is configured correctly the tags aka collections are updated on every device connection.

The things to double check:
  • Do you have the driver configured with the calibre columns to use as tags.
    With the device connected, click on the DOWN ARROW besides the Device icon and select configure this device. On the Collections, covers and uploads tab make sure that your columns are listed in the Collections columns field.
    If you want to read kepub formats, ensure that the Use Kobo viewer for EPUB books is checked. To further control this, you can control the conversion through the field Template to decide conversions
  • In calibre preferences ensure that Automatic Metadata management is snabled. Preferences | Import/Export, Sending books to devices, Metadata management is set to Automatic management

With these settings in effect, on each device connection you should see the series info and the collections on the Kobo updated to match calibre.
