calibre doesn't recognize books on my kobo clara colour

Hello !

I have a problem with my kobo clara colour: 2 or 3 weeks ago, it opened some books with a number of pages 2 or 3 times higher than the reality and the navigation from one page to another or from one chapter to another had become random. After a factory reset, this problem disappeared, but another one appeared : caliber no longer displays the books contained in the e-reader. When I send books to the device, it displays them, but after a restart it no longer displays them even though they are still there: I can read them, Adobe Digital Editions recognizes them. I have an old kobo glo that has no problem. Does anyone see a solution?
Thank you for reading...

Once you log out and log back in, reboot your Kobo before you plug into the USB port. That will stop the database from becoming corrupt. Also use Kobo Utilities to setup a database backup when you plug in your Kobo so you'll have a valid database to restore should you ever get corrected again.

Hello JSWolf !
Thank you for taking the time to read me and for offering me your solution. I did what you advised me: I have :
- followed the procedure to restart the e-reader before connecting,
- installed the Kobo utilities (database check returns: OK
- set up a backup of the database as soon as the e-reader is connected.

For the moment, it's working well. I still wonder what the origin of this dysfunction was. A firmware update?
On the other hand, the ADE page numbers are no longer displayed in the margin, whereas when I used ADE to copy the books on the e-reader, they were present. But this is a detail of no great importance, and I thank you again for providing me with this solution.

Sincerely,
R.G.

The presence (or lack) of ADE page numbers can be controlled by Kobo Reading Settings and the option "Show Adobe EPUB page numbers".

Hello PeterT,

Thank you for reading me and for taking the time to answer me.
The option is activated, but I'm wondering about it : the page number (top of the page, in the chapter and bottom of the page, in the book) changes when... I change pages during the reading, which seems quite new to me, and regardless of the size of the font. Which makes me think that the "Show Adobe EPUB page numbers" option becomes useless...

Thanks again,
Sincerely, R.G.

The database problem is something with the firmware. That's all I know. Maybe someone else will know more about it.

Once you reboot, you can do the second connect to USB to update the metadata without worrying about database corruption. You can connect for as many times as you want as long as you've not yet started reading.

The page number at the top of the page si showing you how many ADE pages you have left in the chapter. The page number on the bottom is showing you the page number (ADE page numbers) you are on and how many total in the eBook. Unless you need to know specifically which page the the text is on, you can turn off the ADE page numbers and reclaim the margin space.

What OS are you using and what version of calibre?

I would hope a new firmware release would fix the database problem.

Then what you may be doing is sending KePub to your Kobo.

Try this. Go to Preferences > Plugins. Search for KoboTouch. Click Customize plugin. Click the Collections, covers & uploads tab. Remove the check from use Kobo viewer for EPUB books. Then click OK and then click Apply.

This will turn off the making of KePub and you'll get ePub sent to your Kobo.

Which I believe is what I'd said.....

Of course, if you go the My Books, Books tab it will shpw in the list view the format of a book; ePub vs Kobo ePub.

Not so. The database can get corrupted based on what you do. Just be careful with things like ensuring you cleanly eject the device from your PC; don't yank the USB cable while connected etc
