Error communicating with device
Suddenly I'm having trouble connecting my kindle paperwhite to calibre. Here's the error I receive. Any ideas?

That error would indicate that your system malfunctioned while attempting to read the metadata.calibre file. Does the file show in Windows Explorer? Can you copy it from your D: drive to your C: drive? Have you tried deleting the file? If you delete it, calibre will regenerate it.

Thank you so much for your reply. If I try to copy the file off the kindle to my hard drive it won't let me, it says it's corrupted or unreadable. If I delete the file and let it regenerate I still receive the communicating with device error. The error is the same as above. So hmm..

In case this might help someone. After numerous restarts of my computer and kindle and deleting files on the kindle etc and nothing working oddly what worked for me was restarting my kindle *while it was connected* to my laptop. Strange. Who knows, but it's now connecting normally for me and working with calibre again.

On my Kobo H2O Edition1 e-reader.
When connecting the device to my PC, I get the message: calibre, version 7.26.0 ERREUR : Erreur: Erreur pendant la communication avec le périphérique CorruptError: database disk image is malformed Traceback (most recent call last): File "calibre\gui2\device.py", line 112, in run File "calibre\gui2\device.py", line 563, in _books File "calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 2091, in books File "C:\t\t\apsw-42s16m2x\src\cursor.c", line 240, in resetcursor apsw.CorruptError: CorruptError: database disk image is malformed What can I do to fix this? |

Log out of your Kobo, then log back in. That message is about the DB on the Kobo. In either case, you might lose recent bookmarks or reading location. |

Thank you very much for your quick response, theducks,
Unfortunately, I don't have the Extended Edition plugin, so I don't have a backup of my Kobo DB. You mentioned that my Kobo DB is unusable. If I can't repair it, what should I do? I have access to the Kobo with Windows explorer, but not with Calibre. |

Think about adding that PI to Calibre (and setting up a folder for those backups) ![]() |

The plugin you'd want is Kobo Utilities to take a backup.
To delete the corrupted Kobo database you need to go to Settings | Accounts and Sign-out from your Kobo Account. You will then need to re setup your Kobo. Sent from my Pixel 7a using Tapatalk |

Thank you so much for your replies, theducks and PeterT.
So, on the Kobo, logging out of my account causes the database to be deleted. I then need to reset the device to build a new database. Once all that’s done, I’ll install Kobo Utilities. Perfect—thanks again! |

I believe that when the account is deleted that the Kobo will reboot by itself. Yep. just checked a sign-out forces a reboot.
