Deregistered & Offline Kindle?
Apologies if this conversation has already happened and I missed it but is anyone using their Kindle as a "dumb ereader"? As in not registered and also in airplane mode? I initially thought of buying an alternate reader but I figured I might as well try to use what I've already got. I have an 11th gen Paperwhite and I'm working on getting out of Amazon's ecosystem and I'm looking at alternate places to buy ebooks. If anyone is trying this out what has been your experience?

If you have your Kindle registered and the firmware is <5.18.1, you can use WinterBreak to jailbreak your Kindle and install KOReader. At that point, you can still use the Kindle's renderers for azw3/KF8 or KFX but most people seem to stick to reading ePubs using KOReader.
Several people have registered their Kindle, jailbroken it and then after testing, de-registering the device and just left it in airplane mode. |

I used my Kindles this way for years. Well, they were registered, but offline all the time and I sideloaded everything from calibre. The same way I'm using my Kobos now.
I didn't bother to jailbreak them, I just sideloaded azw3 files to them. |

I've used my Kindle like that for years. Coincidentally, I just posted about this kind of usage this morning, in a different thread:
