Question about KoboTouchExtended deprecation

Hi,

I was reading about some upcoming changes to Calibre and am trying to get some clarification of the impact.

I understand that KoboTouchExtended provides for on-the-fly (i.e. without needing to stored the kepub) conversion of epub to kepub formats when sending to a device. This is something that I would like to use, but have avoided to date as it only works over a wired connection.

Can I ask, once KoboTouchExtended and the other plugins mentioned in the link are deprecated, will Calibre have the native ability to do on-the-fly conversion over wifi? Ideally I'm looking for ability to do this when sending a batch of books at a time.

Kobo touch Extended always did an on the fly epub to KEPUB.epub conversion when I send over USB.

(There is only native1 KEPUB in my Library)

WiFi? Are you using the Content server? or is it KoReader?

As near as I can tell no. You still need a USB connection to a Kobo device to use the KoboTouch driver.

OTOH, I don't know how you are sending your books wirelessly to your Kobo ereader. Since you mention sending batches of books, it appears that you are not using the content server. One of the several wireless connection tools? Delivering the files over SSH? Sending to DropBox or GoogleDrive?

I usually just fire up wifi in KOreader and am connected after a few seconds in the Calibre app. 'Wireless device connection' perhaps?

If you are using KOReader, a kepub conversion will do nothing for your reading experience. The mass of spans used to assist in locating notations and so on will just be do nothings on KOReader. You need to use Nickel with Kobo's WebKit based renderer if you want to have kepub be useful.

Dont know how KOReader connects wirelessly to calibre. The upcoming changes will affect only USB device connections, basically they do nothing new (barring some minor improvements and the ability to edit KEPUB) compared to the deprecated plugins. They just improve the out-of-the-box experience of using Kobo devices with calibre and mark me taking over maintenance of the kobo subsytem in calibre which was languishing without a maintainer for a wihle.
