I just set up my new Samsung Android 14 tablet and while I had an APK file for my legally purchased workable version of Calibre Companion, Google Play Store is blocking it from connecting to my PC wirelessly so that I can synchronize books. It claims that it does not appear that the app is licensed. I have had no luck figuring out how to neuter that stupid lockout where I can continue to use this app. How on Earth are you able to get it to run on Android 14? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I hate to say it but I think you need to move on. As Android evolved, compatibility for older applications is going to get worse and worse, especially those related to storage access and sandboxing of applications.

Yes, I've purchased Calibre Sync but, at this moment, as I haven't been able to configure as I like and Calibre Companion is working... I'll keep both of them. And if I find an ereader app that honors css (as gitden reader has been removed), I will be a happy woman.

This hardly plays a role with Eink devices and reading is not particularly recommended with the others anyway.
Apart from that, I don't know of any app that I can use to manage my app. 20,000 books in a halfway decent way

If Google is blocking an unlicensed app, you need to turn off Play Protect in the Google Play Store otherwise it will block any app it doesn't recognize, even if it was an app you previously licensed from the Google Play Store.

Settings > Play Protect > Settings > Scan apps with Play Protect.

Tried that early on. Sadly, it did not help. I even tried uninstalling CC completely, turning off Play Protect and then reinstalling. I didn't get guff from the system about the install, but still got the block on wireless. So weird.

I'm making it work with Content Server, but it's awkward. I cannot get mass metadata updates thru the way I do wirelessly. Sigh...

When you go to Play Protect, you'll see a gear icon in the upper right corner, that is where the settings for Play Protect are.

If Play Protect is off then it's possible that it's the calibre server, check the calibre log file @ %userprofile%\AppData\Local\calibre-cache, if you're on Windows.

Coincidentally, I just had the same problem connecting to the Calibre wireless server, the problem seemed to be Calibre itself. I just toggled the wireless connection and, voilà, it connected immediately.

Long ago I got ahem an open seas version of calibre companion 5.4.3.3 although I had paid for it as my reader device did not have google play and I had to sideload calibre companion. I am glad I have kept it and it works like it used to so far. With none of the problems that were added with some of the newer versions as I think that was probably the last release from the original dev.
