Sigil and the EAA
Are any changes required in Sigil for authors to produce ebooks in compliance with the European Accessibility Act (EAA) which comes into effect in June this year?
Or is this compliance all satisfied at the level of the EPUB2 and EPUB3 specifications? |

No idea but most of these acts, just rely on native html and website accessibility markup using Aria roles. So as long as you add the proper Aria markup, and semantic markup, and manually follow whatever else is in their guidelines you should be okay.
So this is an epub developer to-do thing and not a Sigil issues as Sigil gives you full access to the markup so you can add what is needed. That said, if the EAA has a validator app, someone could try to package it up as a plugin much like epubcheck and AccessAide. Last edited by KevinH; 01-21-2025 at 10:02 AM. |

So far as I know, an epub editor application has no required obligation of compliance. That's on the ebooks themselves, the ebook creators, publishers, e-reading software, and e-reading devices. The most compliant editor possible would still be able to produce completely non-compliant content (through no fault of the editing program).
But we make every effort to ensure that accessibility features are supported. If EU publishers and content creators find that Sigil is preventing them from creating compliant content, we will of course look into changes to make it easier for them to do so. |

I have, however, found an online checker, The Born Accessible Content Checker (BACC) on the German website https://bacc.dzblesen.de/. This is "developed by the German Centre for Accessible Reading (dzb lesen) in Leipzig, Germany. For the validation of EPUB documents, BACC uses the Accessibility Checker for EPUB (Ace), developed by the Daisy-Consortium, and extends it with some additional features." I've just given it a test drive with an epub2 compliant book and it has returned a comprehensive report indicating several non-compliant issues, some of which require checking out to fully understand them. I'll give it a go with an epub3 compliant book when I've a bit more time. Last edited by philja; 01-21-2025 at 12:30 PM. |

According to an official EU website, they recommend EPUBCheck, Ace by DAISY and the NVDA screen reader.
And there's an ACE Sigil plugin. Last edited by Doitsu; 01-21-2025 at 12:35 PM. |

I received a reply from the EU DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. Usual burocratic stuff. They (of course) don't have any app to verify that eBooks comply with their specs.
They referred me to their spec documents and invited me to come back with any further questions. I'm thinking of setting up an infinite loop so they can justify recruiting more staff. |
