Kindle paperwhite covers not showing for some news recipes

When using the Calibre recipes tool to fetch news, some of the recipes do not show the cover when the device is in Sleep mode, while other recipes show the cover normally. I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to guarantee the covers will show when the device is in Sleep mode.

Not showing: The Economist, The Atlantic, TheAtlantic.com (these covers are screenshots that I manually paste into Calibre each day I fetch news from this source).

Showing normally: The Economist Espresso, Psychology Today.

Note: I thought maybe it was about the size of the photo, but The Atlantic and Psychology Today's covers are almost exactly the same size (PT is slightly larger even) and Psychology Today shows normally while The Atlantic does not show at all.

It has been awhile since I looked into this, but I believe that the cover of the book must be a JPEG image with JFIF and not EXIF metadata for the Kindle lock screen cover feature to work.

No it's not that calibre already automatically takes care of both of those issues.

Perhaps that bypasses the work that calibre does to correct this issue.

Dont see how it could news downloads work via the regular conversion system, the actual download happens in the input plugin the rest of the pipeline is the same. But should be easy to check by inspecting the cover of one of these downloads for EXIF/JFIF

actually i just re-read the OPs post, what does (screenshots i manually paste into calibre) mean? Are you saying you are not using the covers generated by the fetch news process?

This parenthetical only applies the TheAtlantic.com. The fetch news process does not retrieve a cover, so I use the following procedure to generate my own cover: I go to the Atlantic Daily url (theatlantic.com/category/daily/), click on today's article, then screenshot that page and copy to calibre for the fetched news. See attached jpeg file for reference.

But I am using the covers retrieved from fetch news for the Economist and the Atlantic, but those also have problems where the cover does not display on the sleep screen.

I confirmed that they are all .jpeg extensions. But I couldn't figure out how to check the metadata unfortunately...

Still, based on Kovid Goyal's next post, doesn't seem like that in itself would be the failure point. Thanks for the suggestion.
