Post Best solution to sync Kobo Libra 2 with Calibre wireless

Hello everyone. New to the forum here. Hopefully this is the right subforum to ask

I'm looking for a way to sync my kobo libra 2 with my Calibre database and I want to get your recommendation on the best way to do it.

The main requirements for me are that 1) it needs to be wireless but in-sync with the regular usb way so that if I need to resort to wired, I don't end up with duplicate books and calibre recognizes via wired connection books that were loaded via wireless connection. 2) they have to be visible from Nickel 3) notes and highlights should be synced to calibre, hopefully as part of the same sync process, but not necessarily. I already lost all my highlights and notes from my previous Sony e-reader because they weren't sync'ed anywhere

After spending the last couple of days I have found the following approaches, none of them ideal but I might be missing something to complete the puzzle so I thought I would ask

1) Calibre Content Server + experimental browser on kobo.
This one doesn't fully work since the experimental browser doesn't seem to be able to open the books link. I do get the list of books but after that I can't download them. I click on them and nothing happens. I also imagine this one won't work with Nickel since nothing triggers the DB update so nickel won't even see the book
2) Calibre wireless device connection + koreader
I want to stay with Nickel. I managed to configure everything on koreader but the UI experience was not great and I noticed the battery was draining faster than with nickel. The other problem is that any book loaded here was not recognized via the wired connection or by Nickel since again nothing triggered a DB update and the wired connection plugin uses the kobo DB to do the match
3) Calibre-web + kobo sync
So far this one is looking like the most promising but I haven't tried it yet. Since it simulates the kobo server it should be able to add the books to the DB so Calibre should see them if I use a usb cable (right?). The only thing missing here would be sync'ing the highlights/annotations. If there's a second process to do this, this works as long as it's wireless too
4) Calibre wireless device connection + NickelMenu to launch custom made app that connects to the calibre service
This is the most work but as a last resort, I am a full-time programmer so one other option I have is to write an application that would be lunched from NickelMenu to connect to Calibre's "wireless device connection" without having to run koreader just for that. Also, i could chain the launch of my app to be followed by a DB update, which I saw NM supports. This might also be an interesting solution for others that want wireless connection without having to install koreader just for that
5) Something else I don't know about

So what do you guys think? I hope it's not too picky. I just want a full wireless experience that fits well with calibre and the stock reader, which to me seems like a great UX compared to koreader or plato

If it matters, I'm using Linux and Kobo Libra 2 with fw 4.38.23171

Check out Kobo-UNCAGED by Shermp; the author of numerous Kobo mods. It implements chaley's Smart Driver for Kobo. When you activate it on the Kobo it connects via WiFi to calibre and appears as a Smart device, so you initiate transfers to it from calibre.

You won't be able to use Kobo utilities with it but, thats a small price to pay.

Amazing! thank you @PeterT, didn't know about it and it works very well. After discovering https://github.com/janeczku/calibre-web/issues/2610 I was worried that calibre-web + kobo sync would not work either

the only thing left is wireless sync of notes/highlights with calibre? does anyone know of a way to accomplish this?

Unfortunately I don't think there is a wireless notes / highlight tool. That info is stored in the database on the Kobo.

Existing tools require a USB connection with corresponding dismount of the shared file system on the Kobo and mounting of that, same partition on the host which then allows the opening of that database on the host.

I suppose you could enable ftp on the Kobo and transfer the database to the host and extract the data from it.
