on main screen the field AUTHOR is filled in but AUTHOR SORT is blank??
If i edit metadata its filled in also on export of books or data fields. I am old need detailed help:

Metadata edits (on the form) do not automatically calculate Author (or Title sort) Values. There is a icon to the right side to do that.
I assume Kovid reasoned there were times that value needed help that Auto could not provide (these boxes show in Red when the Auto value does not match what is there).

If you have a lot with this issue, Quality Check Plugin

That has a check for the wrong (Auto version) sorts. It returns with the problem books shown. You select (highlight) those you want to fix, Tap 'E' (the MDE in bulk mode) and tick : Automatically set Author sort (assume that was the check you ran): OK

i wish i was old and smart. 30 yrs at IBM did not make me so.
i added two pictures.

all the author-sort fields are blank...(i have alot of books ###,###)
when i edit them(INDIVIDUALITY) it is filled in . please see the picture attached.

i exported all the data(author and author sort) to comma delimited and EXCELed it. their is also a picture of that.

just want the author sort field to show on the main screen.

i'm 75 in a few months and left ibm 20 plus years ago. New stuff is over my head.

That is a custom column you must have made.
(picture >= 1K words)

Sorts are NOT a grid view column. You must copy/transfer by some method from the internal (the one in the MDE).
You could make this a Calculated custom column with a simple calc, but why, the sort is/can be seen in the details window. The Tag browser uses the sort

1. Add Manage categories (MC) to a toolbar

You want to right-click the column header, then select "Edit column definition" and choose "Column built from other columns". Then just paste this in the 'Template' field:

{author_sort}

edit: what BR said if the column definition is ok!

I am another 79+
While I never worked at IBM (San Jose), I was allowed to make simple changes to our systems that were usually performed by our CE. My department head (who schedules these special events with IBM) was shock when the CE asked if I would be there. He knows how to do that. He turned to me and said he had never had IBM allow others (the system was under maintenance contract) to make those changes.
Some nostalgia: (we have more storage in our phones than that string of DASD offers)

their are 604,107 books (with many dups)

the "bad author sorts" mess up sorts in the main display

(PS i guess i created the author sort field long ago and gave up(like i am again this time)

happy 80 april is 75 for me

(and i thought i was good with pc stuff(compared to most) i bow to you all))
