Books not being imported after loading via Calibre (Kobo Aura H2O)

My wife and I both have Aura H2O eReaders - hers is a v1, mine is a v2 (according to the serial numbers). We recently upgraded to firmware 4.38.23171 having been on 4.38.23038.

Both readers worked as expected on the earlier version. However, after the upgrade, books transferred via Calibre to the v1 eReader were not being imported. After ejecting the device, the imported progress bar got to 6% and then the eReader rebooted but the newly transferred books were not available even though they were visible in the device's folder structure.

The v2 device continued to work as expected. This was all using Calibre 7.22. To eliminate database corruption as the cause, I did a factory reset of the v1 device but it continued to fail to import newly transferred books.

I manually reverted the v1 firmware to 4.38.23038 and things all started working as expected again.

I haven't seen any other reports of this problem, so posting in case anyone can shed any light on it and in case it can help others.

Use Kobo Utilities to check if the database is corrupt or not.

Jon, the factory reset mentioned by the OP in their message and which you quoted would have cleared up any database corruption.

@raichea: Are both your ereaders the Kobo N867 Aura H2O Edition 2 or do you have one original Kobo N250 Aura H2O and one Kobo N867 Auro H2O E2?

Sounds to me like the newer kobo firmware is having issues with one of the books in the set you are trying to send. Send them one by one to see which one it is. Sometimes doing an epub to epub conversion will workaround such issues. More drastically you can do an epub to mobi to epub conversion to remove even more potential issues (but this may spoil some formatting in the book).

Thanks for the thought, but I tried that before factory resetting and it reported back as OK. I should have mentioned....

I tried transferring just one book on the failing machine and that gave the same result. The same book transferred without problem to the v2 Aura.

I also tried using Calibre on two different computers and got the same result with both.

I havn't heard of the N250/N867 distinction (only v1/v2) - I took a look and both have serial numbers that begin N867, so I guess that means they're both that version.

Cheers, Steve.

It is the COMBINATION that may be an issue. The FW has a similar number, but has uniqueness by model (otherwise there would be a single download).

So just because the Aura2 does not choke, is not a 100% that the book TRIGGERS (the book may be valid, but the FW hates something it used) the issue.

I understand that (I'm a hardware and software engineer) but I've tried several books and the problem appears to be consistent. So it seems the problem is specific to the v1 device and the latest firmware and independent of the book but I can't be certain.

I was hoping someone else with a v1 Aura H2O would say they've seen the same problem with the latest firmware but, so far at least, no one has.
