vocab builder unregistered device

thinking of purchasing a kindle but just want to confirm that the vocabulary builder still functions on an unregistered device. I read elsewhere that certain functionality is removed or limited if you don't register the device. Thanks

Hello, I am currently using an unregistered Kindle. There are little to no features on unregistered Kindles, that means no vocabulary builder. You do get all the features once you log in and even then I think some features like cover screen stay if you deregister it later on.

In my opinion you're pretty much better by creating a dummy Amazon account, register the Kindle and enable airplane mode forever.

But if you still don't want to add an account, you can skip the register process when booting the device for the first time by simply restarting it (power button), but remember, the features will not be there (also you get an annoying log in pop up every time you open the library).

Does amazon ask for some kind of ID verification or can you simply register with fake credentials? I read in other threads that you could hack the device and trick it into thinking its registered, but those threads are a bit outdated I don't know if its still applicable now

Also in one of those threads it was suggested that amazon phones home even on an unregistered device? That seems crazy to me, if that's true then I'll stay away from Amazon, can anyone confirm or deny that claim?

The vocab builder is one of two main reasons I'm interested in the device so its highly disappointing that amazon doesn't give you full control and accessibility to the functions of your device that you paid hundreds of $$$, shame on you bezos. This is surveillance capitalism at its most insidious

"Phones home" is a very large and nebulous thing. People would consider it doing simple "is the internet working?" checks phoning home. Checking for firmware updates would be phoning home. Neither has anything to do with surveillance, just common and simple things modern electronics do.

Yeah "phoning home" is a vague and nebulous term. I would consider any connection between my device and the internet a form of phoning home. If my WiFi is switched off and my device is unregistered I would fully expect my device to remain offline and not connect to anything at any time for any reason.

It was suggested in another thread that a device with a spoof registration will be unregistered again by amazon when it "phones home", I'm unsure as to the veracity of that claim or, if true, under what circumstances or conditions the " phoning home" would occur.

Either way, for the prices amazon are charging, I'd expect to receive a fully functioning device that is usable with or without registration or connecting to the mothership. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case as the previous commenter confirmed regarding the vocabulary builder. Hoping anyone with further information or clarification can chime in

The way Amazon sees Kindle, it is more a "service provider" rather than an end-to-end product.

Seems that way, although the way I see it I'm providing the service to them. I pay for the hardware, I pay for the ebooks, they control my device, they take my data. Maybe I should stick with paper

Check out this post, I can't comment personally because I don't have a kindle and have probably made the final decision not to buy one. Too invasive and too many unnecessary headaches for my taste
