Tips on making KOReader as dad friendly as possible

Hello,

I myself have used KOReader for a while a few years back. Right now, my dad's ereader (a Kobo Aura device, running Nickle) is starting to show some software bugs and we've agreed on him trying KOReader on his device before having him buy a new Kobo device.

My dad is not a power user. He just reads epub files page by page. The amount of options that KOReader provides will likely just confuse him.

I want to know ways in which to make KOReader as dad friendly as possible. That means, removing as much options as possible. If possible, remove buttons too so he cannot press something accidentally and needs my help to resolve whatever he's done. If possible, create a library like on Nickle containing just the epub files, hiding all .jpg files and other not .epub files.

I would really love this to be a good first experience for him so he will stay on KOReader.

Thanks in advance.

In KOReader, set a Home folder.
Then make sure you lock KOReader to it (File Manager - Top menu - first tab settings).

Make File Manager view as Mosaic (or detailed view if needed).

Make “Activate menu” by swipe only so that top/bottom menus can only be summoned by swipes, not taps.

Make one quick menu with some basic settings, maybe predefined fonts to choose from.

1. Disable all the plugins except for: gestures and cover browser.
2. Do all the tweakings you want (including mergen3107's suggestions)
3. Enable and configure the rest of plugins your dad is likely to use.

Second step can be pretty wild. Defaults include multifinger gestures, one finger multiswipe gestures and defeault platform event map.

I went and disabled most of the "unexpected" actions when using KOReader as a tool in special education. In the context of a "regular" dad it should be enough to tell him to use a single finger as the interface and disable most of multiswipe gestures he won't use.

Also, like mergen3107 pointed out, activation zones are important to tweak. That covers both the top menu activation and screen corners.

If your dad highlights things you can setup screen corners to pass through, otherwise set them to none.

Also, set up a nice default document profile -- font, font size, margins, line spacing, etc., and save as default (Top menu, second tab (sheet), Document settings ->, Save document settings as default).

And consider turning off the publisher's embedded styles by default, especially if the books come from a variety of different publishers, as many will otherwise need extra tweaking per book to look nice.

If you do turn off the embedded styles, do it *before* setting up the default document profile.

Bottom menu, last tab (gear), Embedded Style. Tap 'off' to turn off for the current book (to see how it looks like), and long press 'off' to make it the default for newly opened books as well.
