Hi, Since the upgrade from Ubuntu-22.04 to 24-04, I have a positioning problem with the mouse after a specific European character (accented for example) the cursor ends up at the end of the line or on a non-breaking space further. It ends up annoying! making corrections and formatting documents (Fr / Ru). My problem with the clipboard is solved by a return to X11 instead of Wayland. |

Yes, Wayland is full of bugs, avoid it like the plague that it is.

I no longer use Wayland but this positioning problem with the mouse is common to X11 and Wayland! |

You need to describe your positioning problem more, I certainly cant replicate clicking with a mouse on an accented character causing the cursor to be positioned anywhere other than where I clicked.

I edit lots of french ebooks, and I've never noticed such a thing (calibre 7.17, debian stable, x11).
I would suspect another soft or utility interacting with the behavior of the mouse. I had once, for example, qstardict interacting with the clipboard of LibreOffice, and only with this one. For testing purpose, try to unload every utility working in the background, or, better, create a new user and load the editor in it. |

@kovidgoyal
* Click behind the first text character (À), the cursor will be positioned just after "Madame de" because there is a non-breaking space between "de" and "Fausse-Lendry". * Click behind the character "a circumflex accent" (â) of "demandent ma grâce", the cursor will be positioned just in front of "glorieuse" which is in the editor at the beginning of the next line. I just created a new user, and simply opened the epub file being created... No positioning problem!!! In my usual environment I only have Evolution and Firefox which are in the background task occasionally I have Gimp and/or the screen capture. What is surprising is that this malfunction appeared after the transition from 22.04 to 24.04 of Ubuntu. Last edited by JeanM; 10-29-2024 at 09:35 AM. |

I've never seen this with Irish or French, but I swapped from Ubuntu to Mint with Mate Desktop about 15 years ago though I was still also using Windows till the end of 2016.

@Quoth
I never had this kind of problem before either. Before Ubuntu-16 I was using CentOS. It's apparently, for me, a configuration residue from Calibre or Gnome (or Python) that is causing problems in my user space. No problems with the Gedit replacement, nor with Firefox nor with Writer. @kovidgoyal As special stuff associated with Calibre, I only have dictionaries (fr, lat, es, pt, ru) and the contents of various user dictionaries… Since in a new user there is no problem of positioning maybe I can rename the directories used by calibre-editor… in this case what are they? By the way about the "user dictionaries" is there a way to save them in an external file (or in an internal file to the current epub, although it is not standard) and restore (on another Linux or Windows computer). |

It's certainly not FF or GIMP or someother you start yourself,, but rather some soft waiting in the background for an event (stardict, screenshooter, some messenger soft, some special config for touchpad or keyboard, …). Start them one by one in your new user's session until calibre begins to misbehave. Then, knowing which one it is, you may disable it in your normal session (maybe you'll need to logoff/login). Another solution, more simple, is to use the new user as the default one, and during the personalization / fine-tuning of this new user's space, check at each step if calibre is still behaving normally. Let us know if this solve the case, and which was the culprit if this apply. Last edited by lomkiri; 10-29-2024 at 02:54 PM. Reason: orhtograph |

So it could be something that's running at start. Is there a safe mode for Ubuntu?

Problem solved! With the upgrade to Calibre 7.21, I also deleted the "~/.config/calibre" directory. So I have a brand new Calibre Editor, I reinstalled the dictionaries of the different languages used and wildly copied some of the personal dictionaries... And my mouse positioning problem seems to have disappeared! Although there is no reason for this problem (perhaps the upgrade to a new version of Ubuntu and temporary use of Wayland instead of X11, and corruption of the configuration information) in any case, thank you very much for your help. |
