Apex Books needs your help

I'm sure they are not the only small publishing house in trouble, but Apex Books is asking its readers to buy more books now from their store. See Brother, can you spare $15.95?, which I came across via MikeCane2008. They report a drop of 75% in revenue in December compared to the August. Apex sells "dark science fiction", which won't be for everyone, but they are almost all available DRM-free at FictionWise.

The Michael A Burstein collection looks good. Bought and downloaded.

Although buying from them direct is the best method (they state), I also purchased a book - "Mama's Boy" - from Fictionwise when this title was first released as a digital title.

I took the plunge and made my first purchase at Fictionwise--I bought every Apex book available.

When I have encountered that particular descriptive term, it has usually been associated with a crossover between the science fiction and horror genres--Usually psychological horror, not bug-eyed-monster horror.

I took this description from Apex's submissions page. At FictionWise their books are typically categorized as combinations of horror, science fiction, dark fantasy, (historical fiction?).

Is Apex's site down? The provided link gives me an "address not found" error, as did clicking on the link pulled up by a Google search.

It won't work for me, either.

I hope the downtime isn't the result of this thread. It would be a little embarrassing to accidentally slashdot their server.

I'm all for supporting small publishing set-ups. Can anyone recommend a good book that they publish to start with for someone who has not read their books?

I bought 3 of them - I prefer techno sci-fi - "Zap! Polaris is missing!" - but there were a couple of titles that looked appealing.

News like this should make everyone aware that publishing is not a get-rich-quick venture. A lot of us in the business work very hard for little money to provide the best books we can. I hope Apex makes it--a number of fine small publishers have failed over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, I've noticed a down-trend in sales at BooksForABuck.com over the past few months as well--part of the economic downturn, I'd guess. Although books are cheap, they're also very easy for many people to put off buying.

I jumped on the band wagon as well. Some of their books look quite interesting and I may not have noticed them otherwise. I got them at Fictionwise as all of my reading is electronic now.
