Sudden desktop icons upon upgrading
A few days ago, I temporarily downgraded to 7.16 to check for presence of a glitch. This required uninstalling Calibre.

Since then, the two times I've updated (first back to 7.17, then to the 7.17.100 preview), now getting desktop icons. This didn't happen before. I doubt there's been any recent change to the install procedure, so what would cause this?

I wouldn't be able to tell, since I have the setting "Show desktop icons" turned off. And I never check the "shortcut on desktop" on any installlers.

seems comfier to me to have everything under quick launch / true launch bars, setting Cascadefolderbands to 1 and so on
