Kepub File Size Questions

I'm converting books in Calibre from epub to kepub and have noticed that the file size for the kepubs is a lot larger than the epubs.
This is mostly causing problems with smaller epub files which can start out at 95KB and convert to kepub at 1.9MB which means my kobo is filling up a lot faster than it should.
Larger kepub files seem to be about 2MB larger than their epub alternative.

Is this normal?

Is there a setting I am missing or is it a part of the conversion that causes the files to become so large?

Should I just give the kepubs up and just stick with epubs?

Maybe it's the calibre converter. Try to convert them with kepubify: https://pgaskin.net/kepubify/try/

Maybe the conversion is replacing the cover?

Thank all for your help.
Turns out it was my own fault. At some point I must have clicked on the embedded fonts and that was what was causing the extra size.
I tried converting it with kepubify and once I realised that kepubs could be the same (small) size I went through every setting in the calibre conversion until I found the embedded fonts.
Lesson learnt.
Thanks again
