Are there any public libraries that allow borrowing without having to have membership
One more quick question. Are there any libraries that allow one to borrow without have a library card to that library? Thanks.

Sorry, just saw the sticky up top, and applied for DC card (I actually pay business taxes there so I qualify anyways).

There are some that are free but membership is required. Check the WIKI.

I would be astounded if any library were to lend books to non-members. How could they keep track of who'd borrowed what if they were to do so?

I was actually thinking of physical books. The title of this thread doesn't specify that it's talking about eBooks.

Some people share their "personal" elibraries with strangers, but I think that's called piracy....But since public libraries are funded by taxpayer dollars, if you are not a resident of a public library's local community, you have to purchase a membership, for probably less money than what you would pay if you were a tax paying member of the community.

i could be wrong, but i got the impression that the OP meant "are there libraries you can borrow from without being a resident of the library's municipality ?" in which case the answer is yes, like New York Public Library (for a fee).

Well, there are online libraries where you can borrow books for free (North Ridge, for example). Check our wiki for that.
