More shooting at the moon specs. If this 4GB chip is really available and ready, then Apple would have used it on an ipod. Ipod sells in bigger quantities than PDAs, so it would make sense for the developers to pitch it at audio player manufacturers first.
Even the recently announced Flash-on-chip announcement is for up to 2GB capacity only. And to use 4GB, Cobalt should support some file system other than FAT, it's most probably there in Cobalt, but don't know how well it's implemented since no Cobalt devices has yet sees the light of day. Also if it's true that PalmOne has such groundbreaking devices in the pipeline, I doubt the PalmOne execs (including the CEO) would be exiting the company as some has the past couple of months. And for a 4GB device, it would be easier to uyse a hard drive based unit than flash memory which is more expensive. 1GB flash are cheap but 4GB are not. If you use four 1GB modules then that would add a lot of bulk to the device. Wishful thinking, I say. If PalmOne would put in 512MB device memory, everyone would be running out to get one, so why add more... they could increase that later and rekindle the upgrade cycle once again (as Apple has with their ipod line). That's business sense... |

If they're going to have 4 GB in it, it may very well be a microdrive. The Sharp Zaurus C3000 has a 4 GB microdrive in it, and supposedly it's well done and doesn't kill battery life too badly.
