Can't use usb based library (read only file system error)

I have been using Calibre portable under windows. I previously also used the same library with my natively installed Calibre on openSUSE. I recently attempted to use my library under Linux and am getting read only file system errors when I attempt to start Calibre under openSUSE. The USB drive is formatted as exFAT, I've checked permissions and I have write permissions to the folder. Does running a library off of USB no longer work?

There is a FAQ on that at the Calibre help site.
Also, only 1 MTP device can be in use on Linux/MAC

Have you tried checking the file system on the external drive? The last time I played with an exFAT drive under Linux, if any errors were seen or the drive had not been dismounted properly, it would mount read-only. This did require me to install the exfat utilities.

Ah yes. An attempt to run a file system check in openSUSE resulted in an error about a read only file system as well. What all I did to arrive at my conclusion is outside of the scope of this forum, but I suspect this drive is on the way out and has some sort of firmware read only flag set that Windows ignores but the Linux kernel does not. So, for now I've moved my calibre library off that drive and onto a newer drive. Once the portable version of calibre is reinstalled, and I can verify my library seems to be intact, I'll try it under openSUSE again.
