BlackBerrys to support AOL and YIM chat

Globe and Mail reports that software for AOL Instant Messenger and Yahoo Instant Messenger will be pre-installed on new RIM BlackBerrys in the coming months.

Another neat feature beside the "always-on" e-mail. When I am in need of a new mobile phone again, I might as well consider a BlackBerry.

My dad has a Blackberry, and it's quite nice. Very well designed interface and device, in my opinion. A little short on software available for it at the moment, but there is more and more becoming available.

And of course, it's one of those few "big" things created by a Canadian company.

I met a guy from Bloomberg and he was quite annoyed that Bloomberg gave him and every other employee a Blackberry device (without phone capabilities). No more excuses for not picking up your e-mails...

I just skimmed the article and didn't see it: will the software be available for current Crackberry users?

This seems like a scary proposition. We already have too many people who tunnel vision their BB's.

The Register says to this:
Quote:
Usage of either IM client will be conditional on the backing of the networks, as will pricing. AIM will only be available through "AOL authorised" networks, for example; RIM and Yahoo! said they would both work to help carriers bring YM services to customers. YM will be pre-installed on Blackberry devices "in the coming months", RIM said.
Still not a definite answer, but it sounds to me as if they are not planning to offer an upgrade to existing devices.
