Is there a way to add books in text format to Caliber and have it automatically catalog them?
The titles of the books are made up of <Author> - <Title>.txt |

Preferences Adding books.
The template governs the fields Code:
(?P<author>[^_]+) - (?P<title>.+) You may need to remove the tick from Read from file contents |

You can add any type of file to calibre to create a 'book' item.
The only file type I've ever had problems with is Windows shortcut files (.lnk) when running calibre under Windows. File types that don't have embedded e-book metadata (e.g .txt, .mp4) will use the template specified in Preferences->Add books->Reading metadata to set the metadata -- see @theducks post #2 above.
