After installing the new update, Calibre doesn't recognize my Scribe. At least in the conventional way. Is there a further step I'm supposed to perform in order to download a new book to the device?

If you are using Linux make sure it's not automounting. Make sure you have no MTP program running if on a Mac.

Pardon my complete ignorance about MTP programs. I am using a Mac. After I updated Calibre this morning, when I connected my Scribe, the Android File Transfer app appeared in my task bar. Waited a while and Calibre never did detect the Scribe. What other MTP programs would I likely be running? I see that my iPhone and I guess my iPad are both MTP devices. Are they involved in some way?

On a mac (or LInux) only ONE program can connect to an MTP device. So make sure the android file transfer program is shutdown before starting calibre.

Thanks, Kovid. After shutting down the android file transfer program, Calibre recognized the Scribe right away.

I have over 2,000 books on the device, and it takes a little over 12 minutes now to show the books I have on the Scribe. I tried it twice, and it took that long both times. Before the Kindle update, it took maybe 2 minutes.

I can deal with it if I have to, but any way to speed up the process? Just asking.

Directory listing is slower with MTP. Any device or host program, so not specific to Calibre or Scribe.
A transfer of a single file might be unaffected.

Sadly no MTP is very poor at listing performance. You can right click on the device in calibre and configure it to exclude some folders when scanning. Then the list of books will be incomplete but fast.
