Buying Paperwhite 10th Gen For The First Time For Jailbreaking and What To Do?
I apologize for asking what would be basic information. As the title said, this is my first e-reader for, well, ever - I've build digital library for over a decade, and finally in good enough place to get e-reader.
Since I'm not on US or other place where Amazon ecosystem would be advantageous though, I decided I'll Jailbreak it. But, well, this is also my first time, so I have some questions. 1. Can I use it without Amazon account? After some search the result seems to be conflicting, but it might be a yes. 2. Can I just drop .mobi to it and read without Amazon account/nag screen? I want to test if the Kindle works without doing anything more. 3. Do I update it first then Jailbreak, or just go straight to Jailbreak? The second seems to make more sense, but I realize people might still want to be in Amazon ecosystem even when Jailbreaking (their books are there, after all) so maybe the first is actually common practice. 4. Is it possible to keep Kindle permanently offline/not connected to wifi? Since I'm not gonna be on Amazon ecosystem anyway, and I don't want it to accidentally update Jailbroken device... unless it's actually fine? 5. If I Jailbreak it and install ScreenSaver, does that means no ads? Amazon will deactivate the ad anyway since I'm not on US, as I understand it, but since I don't plan on logging-in, calling Amazon support might be trickier. 6. What do I do after Jailbreaking? Obviously, installing reader that support more format. I generally don't find dictionary especially useful, though. Beyond that, no clue. Thanks for your time! |

If you don't use the Amazon ecosystem, why buy a Paperwhite and not some other brand?

... did my message go through? Uuh, I've checked competitors and these are just more expensive. I couldn't justify paying that much for something I can already do with my smartphone, but somewhat better.

Yes, you can use your Kindle without an Amazon account, but you won't be able to use collections unless you jailbreak. I have no idea whether you even can jailbreak with recent firmware versions, so that's something to keep in mind - you may not be able to jailbreak your PW.
You can sideload via USB, but don't use mobi, that's an old, outdated format. Use AZW3. Formatting is better, you can use custom fonts and the boldness slider. And you can keep wifi permanently off if you want. Last edited by Sirtel; 07-30-2023 at 06:02 PM. |

It's 10th generation though, and from reseller, so hopefully it's not updated to the newest FW.
I can live without jailbreak so long I can read my books. Hm, AZW not MOBI? I'll keep that in mind. |

Got my Paperwhite yesterday, jailbroken successfully, installed KOReader. Firmware is 5.12.4. And yeah you're correct, I don't have to register at all to use it. Thanks!

It's for additional functionality, yeah.
Also, I'm not anywhere close on Amazon markets anyway, so about all warranty got for me probably support email/chat. If Amazon has proper local market and accepted local currency, I might be more hesitant at jailbreaking. |
