Nia HELP: I replaced my .kobo folder

It has been quite a while since i updated my Kobo Nia, and with my brain disengaged (enjoying some music obviously), I was using NiLuJe's one-click installer and stupidly replaced the .kobo folder

(i.e. all contents of .kobo replaced by the one-click installer KoboRoot.tgz). NiJuLe's instructions are clear and I should have used the install script but forgot, was distracted etc. This is 100% operator error and I very much appreciate all the tools and the hard work that is obviously placed in them.

What can I do to get back to a working system? I haven't ejected my Nia yet, but I think the .kobo folder is critical for the system and don't really know what I can do other than bang my head on my desk shouting idiot...

Do you use Kobo Utilities with calibre to backup your database? If so, you can restore your .kobo directory/

Have you ever backup your Kobo's user drive? If so, you'll have a .kobo you can copy over.

I switched to a new laptop so I'll need to root around to see if I have Calibre backups, but would the backups have the .kobo folder contents (which while my memory is foggy is the OS itself, the database is elsewhere). Calibre's breadth keeps surprising me so who knows.

And no I never manually backed up, as simple as that would have been. Some more head banging called for.

Your help is much appreciated.

As I still have the Nia mounted I am trying to download an SD image from the developers forum to see if there is a .kobo folder there. Or if anyone has a backup they have shared previously?

Thank you for the bright idea, but I use macOS which has the habit of replacing folders, the warning dialogs on whether I really wanted to replace I blindly clicked through while enjoying a Bach partita

Thanks Quoth. I may be actually be misunderstanding the purpose of the .kobo folder, reading around it seems I am mistaken that the .kobo folder hold OS files, but just update or accessory files. If so an unmount and all may be good, though I have lost my `Kobo eReader.conf` file there I will try to recreate that. I was reticent to unmount just in case there was something I could do so haven't got to try a factory reboot etc yet...

Well I bit the bullet, unmounted and rebooted the Nia; it needed to reinitialise via Wifi but it is now back up and booted. my Nickelmenu is broken (as the .adds folder also got borked so i lost my NM config) but lets take things one step at a time... Many thanks to all suggestions and help.

But do we know what will happen if .kobo is empty when it's ejected?

It reboots and makes a new one and you have to sign in / register. Which is what the unfortunate person did.
