I updated to v6.22 today from v6.17.
I tried adding a book and received the following error... I was not having this problem yesterday in v6.17. Has this issue been covered before? I've read other threads but one was using google drive and another seemed to be an anti-virus issue. I am not using google drive, and I don't think the anti-virus is the problem here. I can see you copied the error message, yet you post an image - why?
Anyways - the problem appears to be something to do with Calibre wanting to create a 'data' sub-directory in the C:\Program Files\Calibre2 directory - I have no idea why it would be wanting to do that at startup (or at any other time). Calibre 'data' directories are normally found within calibre library book folders. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 07-02-2023 at 06:29 AM. |

That's not while adding a book, it's while editing metadata. First try running calibre without any third-party plugins, like this
calibre.exe --ignore-plugins |

Yes, that is correct. I added a book, then went back to edit some incorrect metadata. Changed "Children of Men" to "The Children of Men" and also fixed the author from "P. D. James" to "P.D. James" and some other corrections.
I added another book just now, (I did not start without plugins) and saved it. I then went back and edited the metadata and saved again. The error did not occur. Instead I ended up with an empty folder named "data" on my desktop. But I don't know if it happened on the first or second save. I wasn't expecting it so I wasn't paying attention. I deleted that "data" folder and went back and edited the library metadata for the new book, and all worked without any issue. There was no "data" folder recreated. Then I added a second book and all worked as expected. I guess I'll just keep monitoring, unless you need me to do something else? |

That sounds like the folder path for those books in the db is empty for some reason, causing the data folder to be created in the current folder. I will add some checks for that condition.

The book in my first post I am sure I used "Add book from a single folder". Just to confirm, I was not trying to add any "data files" to the entries, so it is strange that it is creating the data folder. |

Could be I'd appreciate it if you can isolate a set of steps to reproduce, I am currently rather busy so want have a chance to investigate immediately.

Sure. Let me fiddle around and see if I can get it to fault again.

@kovidgoyal
Ok, I was able to replicate the creation of the "data" folder on my desktop when adding a new library entry. I can't seem to replicate the error message from my first post. I captured the process in a video. That will show the exact steps I have taken. You can probably skip forward while I modify the metadata fields but it shows exactly what I am changing. It also seems that it happens right after starting Calibre and adding the first new library entry. It doesn't happen when adding a second library entry. Note at the start on the left margin of the desktop there is no \data\ folder, then at the end there is. mkv files aren't accepted for upload to the site, so I have uploaded it here... https://easyupload.io/ggh2ka |

One question regarding the description... Windows: Fix empty data folder getting created in directory calibre is launched from when changing title/author for a book with an existing data folder I was adding/editing new library entry/books. There was no "existing data folder". |

There must have been probably it was created by one of your plugins.

It does not show in the Calibre GUI, but when I click on "Book Files" and Explorer opens, there is a data folder. I wonder what is creating it. --Edit-- Checking my recently added books. All the books I added since upgrading to v6.22 have a hidden \data\ folder. Books I added while still using v6.17 do not have the folder. Last edited by Karellen; 07-05-2023 at 11:29 PM. |

FTR: This morning I had an empty 'data' sub-folder appear in a freshly installed Version 6.22 Calibre Portable folder (i.e. the folder with the *-portable.exes, Calibre, Calibre Library and Calibre Settings sub-folder). Added: there were no optional plugins installed and all preferences were at default settings. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 07-06-2023 at 12:43 AM. |
