Kindle Gen 3 ("Keyboard") is suddenly unresponsive

Is this what happens when the battery finally gives up? It was working just two weeks ago. Today, the charge light will not come on when it's plugged in to USB. Acting like a complete brick. Is it recoverable with a new battery, or time for the recycle bin?

I guess I would have expected a dead battery to still have some functionality when plugged in.

Yes, the K3 and DX(G) both act dead when the battery (really a single cell) is dead. Easily replaced. Not glued or soldered.

Update: It started charging again after I removed it from the official Kindle case. Is there any chance that the metal prongs from the (unlighted) case are shorting and contributing to battery drain?
