View original article via Pocket?

While reading something on Pocket, is there a way to open the original article in Kobo's web browser? The last time this question was asked was in 2018, have there been any changes since that would allow this feature? Would this be possible through a NickelMenu script?

Pocket's parser often misses images or entire sections, and so having the ability to view the original article is often the simplest solution to a frustrating problem.

It might be a little bit of a side comment but sometimes I tend to use the website print friendly so it actually edits out or at least gives me the ability to edit out a article and just focus on the actual material and text

I don't use Pocket or even Kobo's web browser that much, but I see some people doing things like this to get a web page from NickelMenu. i.e.

menu_item :main :Calibre :nickel_browser :modal:http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/mobile

But you have to get the web page address from somewhere, if Pocket hasn't decided to send it to you since then!
(Maybe if you sync a bookmark file with the title and web address each time you save to Pocket , and the NickelMenu script lets you select from the list???)

People browsing web pages on android phones could also try sharing them to a print-to-pdf app, and serving the pdf to your Kobo using an android webserver.

This is easy to set up using just 3 apps you install on your android phone. (Bill Farmer's Print app,OI File Manager, and lWS lightweight Web Server, all from FDroid. KOReader can do a decent job on small pdf files like this if you turn Reflow to on. ( When reading a pdf, you click on the lower part of the page, select the 'Aa' icon, switch 'Reflow' on, and choose a magnification level. )

****

If you want to download web pages from android as epub files you can use:
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/info...aukao.einkbro/

If you want to download web pages from android as pdf files you can share to:
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org....efarmer.print/

To web serve these to your kobo browser:
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/net.basov.lws.fdroid/
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org....s.filemanager/

While I was working on https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=349637 I tried to have a look if the actual URL is stored somewhere. As far I can tell, the database does not store the actual URL and the Pocket API is closed source. I've only found a mention of the domain at the start of every article.

Ahh, thanks for confirming.
So I guess that leaves it up to the user to bookmark each article.

Actually I tried exporting Firefox bookmarks but the resulting file is a complex mess that takes all day to add as book to the Calibre content server.

So I instead exported bookmarks from Netsurf, added the resulting hotlist.html file as a book to Calibre, and was able to open it with the NickelMenu entry:

menu_item :main :Calibre :nickel_browser :modal:http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/mobile

So I could then access the epub from the Kobo, and open the bookmarks, and hence the link to the Pocket source webpage.

(Of course you could just download the hotlist.html or epub to the Kobo and open it with the Kobo default reader - no NickelMenu entry needed.)

So the key is to update your bookmarks in netsurf every article you add to Pocket, and periodically sync or download the hotlist to the Kobo.

A stopgap until something better comes along...

Does the Kobo version of Pocket have a "share" button? On the web, Pocket "shares" a link to the original article.

I can't say because I don't have Pocket installed now.

In normal epubs to search for the title of the article, you can highlight the item and select Search->Search Google , which may land you on the original article.

But if Pocket articles are not compatible (I didn't try), you have an alternative that IS compatible because you download an actual epub:

https://www.fivefilters.org/2022/kob...les-and-epubs/

I tried this with the Chrome browser extension - no signup required! Just downloaded the epub.
The converted epub even includes a link to the source web page at the end.

Unfortunately, in my brief tryout of the android app, it hung with the spinning circle on the screen.
Since I do 99% of my web browsing on my phone, that doesn't work for my case.
