Not sure where this belongs, but cannot bring up Calibre UI

https://www2.mobileread.com/i/smiliesadd1/help.gif

I'm hoping that someone can help with this, because I'm stuck.

Sometime in the last 3-4 days (was offline some so can't nail exactly), I can't bring up the GUI for Calibre 6.17 64-bit. The program starts, gives no errors, goes thru "loading books" and "initializing user interface, then shows up as "started" on the taskbar (I have it pined there). But when I mouse over the icon, it shows a picture of a totally white, blank calibre screen. Clicking does nothing. Even tried double clicking, although not needed in taskbar, but no joy.

Noted the following:
  • running 64-bit Calibre
  • "initialling user interface" sometimes comes up pretty fast, especially since I have over 65,000 books listed.
  • Renamed my primary library so it wouldn't load it, no help
  • Removed Calibre 6.17 (been using since it came out), installed Calibre 6.11 - no joy
  • uninstalling last system update didn't help
  • uninstalling last 2 Dell updates (from this timeframe) didn't help
  • Currently using Calibre Portable 16.7, and it opens with the current large database, and comes up fine. Ran Check Library from portable version, and it reports no issues. Obviously not a long term solution, but it keeping me going for now.
  • No hard disk issues reported on that drive (1 GB SSD with half the space free) - chkdsk p: /f /x
  • after opening dialog goes away, the computer is using 12% CPU and 16% memory (of 64 GB) and 0% Disk. When I'm doing heavy usage of Calibre, total Computer memory can go up to 40%+ (which is why I went from 32 to 64 gb memory)
  • Calibre is then showing one main program, using 0.1% memory and 962 MB memory, a worker process (0% CPU & 8.7MG memory) and a Console Windows host (0% CPU & 5.7 MB) None of these figures change for at the 10 min I monitored after opening dialog went away ("initializing user interface")

I really want my full featured Calibre back. Any help or other things to try would help.

well, no luck with instructions.

The output from the debug confused me. the file it complains about doesn't exist, nor is there a reference to it in registry.

You might want to try a shift-right click on the calibre taskbar icon. Click on Move and then use the arrow keys to see if you can move the calibre window into the viewing area. The left and right arrows seem to work best for me since my dual monitors on the docking station are horizontal while I often use my laptop disconnected from the dock while up and down arrows work for a co-worker who has his monitors vertically stacked.

There WAS also an error in one of the plugins that someone might want to look at. ???

Code:
File "calibre_plugins.savetoformat.savetoformatacti on", line 53
print 'Default saving'

BR's method is easier but does not work with Windows 11 where Cascade Windows seems to have disappeared

Microsoft gives, then Microsoft takes away. Not looking forward to upgrading to 11 at some point

I'm sure that moving the start button to the middle is a much higher priority.

Cosmetics seem to be many of the reasons to 'upgrade' an OS .

W7 was a massive step forward in reducing vulnerabilities. I had a USB HD TV tuner card that just worked (Media center).
I played with W8 in the Demo room at MS MTV (and Ubuntu seemed to follow that 'tile' thing. I guess it made sense on a touch screen,,, but ... ). Linux Mint got rid of some of that hated UI.
Then W10 landed on my laptop and my tuner no longer worked, many features of my Brother MFC disappeared
<rant>
Recently I helped a friend commission a new W11 laptop. Hoo-Boy. I had problems finding settings I frequently used. Are they taking control away from users, requiring a internet connection for everything (so they can mine your activity?) ?

They are definitely trying to make using a local user as hard as possible. Being asked 3 times to confirm that I wanted a local user and giving up all the "goodness" of having a online Microsoft user was more than a little annoying.

When setting up a Windows 10 system for someone, I had to disconnect it from the internet entirely to convince it to let me make a local account.

I still think of Windows 7 as basically a glorified servie pack for Vista. But poor Vista got so much bad press (thanks to it being shoved on computers that could barely run even XP) that I don't really blame them for wanting to dump that.

Also, I loved Vista's green glass folder icons so much that I swiped them and use them on my current system.

Yes, Win7 should have been free to Vista users. It is a SP of Vista really, and should be Win 6.0.1 or 6.0.2 (Vista is really Win NT 6.0, Win 2K is NT 5.0, XP is 5.1, Server 2003 is maybe 5.2, Not sure what the Itanium version of XP was, very short lived.)
I read rumour Win 12 is on the way.

But MS Word for Windows numbering was / is mad.
