Not sure where this belongs, but cannot bring up Calibre UI
https://www2.mobileread.com/i/smiliesadd1/help.gif
I'm hoping that someone can help with this, because I'm stuck. Sometime in the last 3-4 days (was offline some so can't nail exactly), I can't bring up the GUI for Calibre 6.17 64-bit. The program starts, gives no errors, goes thru "loading books" and "initializing user interface, then shows up as "started" on the taskbar (I have it pined there). But when I mouse over the icon, it shows a picture of a totally white, blank calibre screen. Clicking does nothing. Even tried double clicking, although not needed in taskbar, but no joy. Noted the following:
I really want my full featured Calibre back. Any help or other things to try would help. |

well, no luck with instructions.
The output from the debug confused me. the file it complains about doesn't exist, nor is there a reference to it in registry. :\Program Files\Calibre2>calibre-debug -g calibre 6.17 embedded-python: True Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 Windows ('64bit', 'WindowsPE') ('Windows', '10', '10.0.19045') Python 3.10.1 Windows: ('10', '10.0.19045', 'SP0', 'Multiprocessor Free') Interface language: None Successfully initialized third party plugins: Gather KFX-ZIP (from KFX Input) (1, 51, 0) && DeDRM (10, 0, 3) && Package KFX (from KFX Input) (1, 51, 0) && AudioBook_Duration (1, 0, 9) && Author Book Count (2, 2, 3) && Baen (1, 1, 0) && Calibre Power Search Plugin (2, 2, 0) && Check Books (0, 1, 7) && Count Pages (1, 13, 0) && EpubCheck (0, 2, 4) && EpubMerge (2, 15, 0) && EpubSplit (3, 6, 0) && Extract ISBN (1, 6, 0) && Find Duplicates (1, 10, 8) && Generate Cover (2, 3, 2) && KFX metadata reader (from KFX Input) (1, 51, 0) && KFX Input (1, 51, 0) && Set KFX metadata (from KFX Output) (1, 67, 0) && KFX Output (1, 67, 0) && KePub Input (3, 6, 3) && Kindle hi-res covers (0, 5, 0) && KindleUnpack - The Plugin (0, 83, 1) && LanguageTool (0, 1, 2) && Manage Series (1, 5, 1) && Modify ePub (1, 8, 1) && MultiColumnSearch (1, 0, 96) && Prettify Cover (1, 6, 0) && Quality Check (1, 13, 4) && Save To Format (0, 0, 6) && Smashwords Metadata (1, 0, 2) && Standard Ebooks (1, 0, 0) QPA platform: windows devicePixelRatio: 1.0 logicalDpi: 96.0 x 96.0 physicalDpi: 89.31868131868131 x 86.5909090909091 ApplicationPaletteChange event ignored Using calibre Qt style: True ApplicationPaletteChange event received [0.00] Starting up... You might want to try a shift-right click on the calibre taskbar icon. Click on Move and then use the arrow keys to see if you can move the calibre window into the viewing area. The left and right arrows seem to work best for me since my dual monitors on the docking station are horizontal while I often use my laptop disconnected from the dock while up and down arrows work for a co-worker who has his monitors vertically stacked.

They are definitely trying to make using a local user as hard as possible. Being asked 3 times to confirm that I wanted a local user and giving up all the "goodness" of having a online Microsoft user was more than a little annoying.

When setting up a Windows 10 system for someone, I had to disconnect it from the internet entirely to convince it to let me make a local account.

Also, I loved Vista's green glass folder icons so much that I swiped them and use them on my current system. ![]() Last edited by ownedbycats; 05-17-2023 at 06:02 PM. |

Yes, Win7 should have been free to Vista users. It is a SP of Vista really, and should be Win 6.0.1 or 6.0.2 (Vista is really Win NT 6.0, Win 2K is NT 5.0, XP is 5.1, Server 2003 is maybe 5.2, Not sure what the Itanium version of XP was, very short lived.)
I read rumour Win 12 is on the way. But MS Word for Windows numbering was / is mad. |
