6.17 Permissions Errors

Here's my Glitchlet:

Calibre 6.17 is loaded. I click on Add Ebook and it adds fine. I'm able to use the View and open the book so I know it's there and fine.

BUT....

I then go to Edit Metadata where I format the book title and author the way I want and make sure the Book's information is filled in correctly, then I click OK and a pop up says: "Could not change the on disk location of this book. Is it open in another program?" with the following

When I click OK again, the metadata screen closes and the book shows with no book cover and I get this error

ERROR: Cannot view: [SEALs of Honor 31] - Hale has no available formats.

and you no longer can View the book from within Calibre.

THEN.....

I go to the Calilbre Ebooks directory....... and I find the book there and it looks just fine and opens just fine when I load it into Ebook Reader in Firefox just to see...

Everything was fine when I was working with version 6.10. All the issues happened when I updated to 6.17.

I'm actually wondering if it's operator error... but I'm not doing anything differently from before.... so maybe it is a glitch in the newest release.

added date to the glitch above as I tried with another book:

got to the same area where I edited the Metadata. Clicked okay. got the error and then clicked okay again....

Then clicked on Convert Books and get:

Could not convert King of Eon as it has no e-book files. If you think it should have files, but calibre is to finding them, that is most likely because you moved the book's files around outside of Calibre. You will need to find those files and re-add them to Calibre.

I didn't move any of the files at all.... I've just been clicking buttons and filling in the metadata information.

Plus, when I checked the directory where the books wind up in storage... all that is there is the cover and the metadata.opf.

I think the reason I got the converted book from the previous book is I loaded it into Calibre then just clicked on convert book....

Dunno.... it's almost like there seems to be a problem with editing the Metadata.

Any other suggestions or info needed??

@ShyKat: Exclude your calibre library folder from your antivirus/file sync programs. Some program is opening files in it and preventing calibre from deleting them.

What sort of device of your F: drive, if it's any sort of network device (NAS, Network Server, Cloud) therein lies the problem, see ==>> https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq...rked-drive-nas

Okay. I found how to do that thanks to google. The first time I went back in and tried loading the file and changing the metadata, the same thing happened so I decided to close everything and reboot the computer......

I held my breath and closed my eyes and........

IT WORKED!!!!!!!

I don't want to jinx myself but I think that simple instruction worked!!!

I'm going to try another book and see if my luck holds!!

Well FUDGE....

I did 2 books.. the two that I had been working on before. Just tried a third.

I added the book then opened edit metadata and filled in the author the way I like it and then added in the book information.

Everything looks great... all the same steps I did with the other two books and now.. again..... I click OK and I'm not trying to move the book.. just add the metadata information... and I get

The permission error at the bottom... is a directory with the book's original title and then, I look in the directory and see there is a directgory with the book's original title with nothing in it and then a directory with the new title I have used and in that directory is an epub with the title formatted the way I like it.

I click okay to close the error and the window and, on the main screen, the book's cover is no longer there. and when I try to delete the file, I get:

It keeps pointing back to the directory with the old book's name and not the new one. To get the book to be deleted, after I get that error, I have to close Calibre and then open it again and the book is gone.

I don't know why those first 2 finally worked and now this one doesn't.

Where is this directory with your Calibre library? On a local disk? On a network disk? Is OneDrive syncing the directory?

I don't think I'm using OneDrive.... the directory has auto backups to an offline google drive.

I have multiple drives in my desktop. C is boot, D, E and F are storage drives and my ebooks are all on the F drive.

Now... I went back in and did an Exclusion to the Directory where I have the ebooks I'm ready to convert.

Rebooted

And I'm still holding my breath, but I just did 3 more books and am getting ready to do a 4th....

My face is turning blue but, so far, so good..... off to try that 4th book.

Again, nothing special, just formatted the title differently, added in the information and the publisher.

Seems like a problem intermittently with Calibre creating a directory with the original name of the book and then it's getting confused when I change the title.

Original is "G R I Z Hot!_Galactic Cyborg Heat"
I changed it to: [Galactic Cyborg Heat 41] - G R I Z Hot!

When I cancel out of the Metadata screen, the book no longer has the book cover showing.

When I try to delete the file, I get the error: Could not access G R I Z Hot!_Galactic Cyborg Heat (3242). Is it being used by another Program?

Google drive destroys the linkage in-from the DB
It is in the FAQ
It is the worst cloud solution as it is 99.9% guaranteed to mess up a Calibre Library.
Others are just iffy because of timing delays or multiple uses (calibre is single access)


Never let a unzipped LIBRARY touch a Google drive (an archive is what GD would see, not the files and folders).

#1 How can I tell Google Drive to NOT backup that directory? I've right clicked on the directory and don't see any way to make Google Drive stop the back up of that directory. I haven't had any issues till this latest release of Calibre

I've used Calibre for so long that it's been a very long time since I read the FAQ.

Is there a way to point Calibre to a NEW directory where to save all the output files? I haven't found out how to tell Google drive to stop backing up the Google Ebooks directory where the program puts files.

Does making a new, unbacked up directory for Calibre sound like a way to get this to work? If so, how would I do that??

Where in the FAQ can I find the information about NOT using Google Drive??

Uninstall Google Drive software. It's only suitable to transfer (at a pinch) between Android gadgets. It messes file names and Google/Alphabet scan the contents. You can't know where it's stored, how it's managed, privacy or security.

Also the Calibre FAQ explains to ONLY use local drives (USB, SCSI, eSATA etc count as local). A NAS, Share from other computer, any cloud storage are NOT local drives.

If you want to backup the Calibre Library use Export (and later Import). If really concerned about off site have more than one USB drive and rotate one to a friend or relative's house or whatever.
