Change default browser in Calibre 6.17
I want to change default browser from Opera to Vivaldi in 6.17. ChatGPT tells me several ways to do it, but none of them work for me. Running KDE Neon 5.27. Tried Preferences> Behavior and Preferences > Miscellaneous with no help either place. Can anyone help?
Here's one of ChatGPT's responses: To change the default browser used by Calibre 6.17, you can follow these steps: Open Calibre. Click on "Preferences" in the top menu. In the preferences window, select "Behavior" in the left-hand pane. Under the "Default Viewer" section, click on the drop-down menu next to "E-book viewer" and select "External browser". Next to "External browser command", click on the "..." button to open the file chooser. In the file chooser, navigate to the executable file for the browser you want to use as the default. This may be located in the "Program Files" folder on a Windows machine, or in the "Applications" folder on a Mac. Once you have selected the browser executable file, click on the "Open" button to close the file chooser. Click on the "Apply" button to save the changes. Now, whenever you click on a link within Calibre, it will open in the browser you have set as the default. Note that this will also change the default browser for other applications on your computer that use the system default. If you want to change the default browser for Calibre only, you can try using a plugin like the "Advanced E-book Viewer" or "Internal Viewer Replacement" plugin, which allows you to specify a different browser to use as the default within Calibre. There is no Default Viewer section. Last edited by bullet; 04-27-2023 at 07:10 PM. Reason: additional info |

Just as a followup I told ChatGPT:
This is wrong. Calibre uses the default system browser. Please correct your answer. Polite response from ChatGPT: I apologize for the confusion in my previous response. You are correct that Calibre uses the default system browser, and it does not have a built-in option to change the default browser. Therefore, if you want to change the default browser used by Calibre, you will need to change your system's default browser. The steps to do this will vary depending on the operating system you are using. For Windows: Open the Settings app by pressing the Windows key + I. Click on "Apps." Click on "Default apps" in the left-hand menu. Under the "Web browser" section, select your preferred browser from the list. For Mac: Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences." Click on "General." In the "Default web browser" section, select your preferred browser from the drop-down menu. For Linux: Open your system's settings app. Look for the "Default applications" or "Preferred applications" option. Under the "Web browser" section, select your preferred browser from the list. Once you have changed your system's default browser, Calibre will use that browser when opening links. I hope this clears up any confusion and I apologize for any inconvenience caused by my previous answer. |

Why bother? ChatGPT isn't a real search engine. It's not particularly up to date. It rarely gives real links to real sources.
It's a malicious toy, bad for the environment and designed by smart idiots, partly funded by Microsoft. |
