Upgrading the Elipsa’s Storage Capacity

I have searched YouTube, search engines, and this site for information on if the Elipsa storage capacity can be expanded. I assume it has a microSD card like other Kobos, but I’m not sure. I’ve looked for tear downs, too. I haven’t come up with anything—not even another person asking this question, so I must be using the wrong keywords.

If there is a thread you know of that covers this already, could you share it with me? Otherwise, does anybody know if the Elipsa uses a microSD card, and do you know how to safely remove the back so that I can clone that card and upgrade it? So far my plastic spudger is either too thick for the job or I’m prying in the wrong places. I’d like to know better where to start prying before I use my thinner metal spudger. I’d like to avoid damaging or scoring the device. Thanks.

As far as I am aware which comes from an FCC document when the Elipsa was released, the Elipsa like the Sage uses a soldered eMMC chip which not removable for those of us who do not access to a surface mount rework station.

Checked and the FCC document shows the Elipsa has either a Kingston or Samsung 32GB eMMC storage device. See the attached pdf.

Thank you so much for that. I was looking *everywhere* and was beginning to suspect that I couldn't find it because it couldn't be done. I don't have access to a surface remount work station, and I wouldn't want to experiment on my Elipsa even if I did.

Two questions for you then:
1) Where did you find the FCC doc? Next time I'd like to include that in my searches.
2) Are all of the newer Kobos made this way now?

Some Kobo models have an internal micro SD and some use a soldered on IC. I can't see any pattern.
Original Libra uses IC, but later Libra 2 uses SD card.
Sage: IC
Elipsa: IC
Original Aura HD H2O has internal and external SD cards.

Oh well, at least it's 32 G Byte. Both reMarkable models have no external SD slot and only about 6 G Byte of user space.

I did a google search on 'Kobo N604 fcc'. A search on noikbn604 is more focused but I couldn't remember the FCC ID for the Elipsa at that time (basically, most of the Kobo ereaders show up as noikbnxxx where XXX is the digits in Kobo's model number. So noikbn605 would get you the Elipsa 2e for example.

It seems hit and miss. Of the Kobo models, I have looked at, one of the original Touch models, the original Aura, Aura One, Forma, Sage and Elipsa have fixed storage.

I also think so. I can't see any logic or pattern to it.

Upgrading the Elipsa’s Storage Capacity

Thanks, both of you. I love learning new things.

As for patterns, the Clara 2E is extremely recent, but it has a microSD card. The only pattern I would hazard (using the last few models as reference) is that Kobo solders on the memory for higher end models. Using that logic, the Elipsa 2E probably has soldered on memory as well. (Which may have already been pointed out elsewhere.)
